Chapter 4 - What Lies Beneath the Floorboards

At ten o’clock that morning, my phone rang again. This time, it was my younger brother, Leo.

I didn’t want to answer, but something in the desperate frequency of his text messages—Please David, don't block me, I have something you need to see—made me press accept.

“David,” Leo breathed, his voice ragged, as if he had been running. “I’m at the library on 4th Street. Eric’s lawyer forced Mom to stay at his mansion, but I snuck out through the back alley. You need to meet me. Right now.”

Twenty minutes later, I met Leo in a quiet study room at the back of the city library. Leo looked terrible—dark purple circles hollowed out his eyes, and his hands trembled as he slid a heavy, dusty black leather binder across the wooden table toward me.

“What is this?” I asked, staring at the book.

“It’s Eric’s,” Leo whispered, glancing nervously at the door. “He keeps it in a locked safe inside the floor of his private study in the barn. I knew the combination because I saw him open it last year when he was hiding cash from the IRS.”

I opened the binder. Inside were dozens of pages written in precise, cramped handwriting, organized by dates going back nearly four years—shortly after Eric married my mother.

My eyes scanned the first page:

July 14th: Leo failed to trim the hedge line to 2 inches. Consequence: 6 hours garage isolation. Water restricted until 18:00. Progress: Satisfactory.

November 3rd: Elena argued regarding household budget. Consequence: Phone privileges revoked 72 hours. Car keys sequestered. Progress: Submissive.

March 12th: Kevin (age 6) refused to eat vegetables. Consequence: Kennel exposure, 1 hour. Subject cried continuously. Increase exposure time for future non-compliance.

I felt cold air fill my lungs, but I couldn't exhale. The binder wasn't just a journal; it was a meticulous, chilling ledger of systematic, psychological, and physical torture spanning four years. Every member of the household had been categorized, logged, and subjected to a calculated regime of control.

“He... he kept a record of it?” I whispered, horrified.

“He’s a psychopath, David,” Leo said, tears slipping down his nose. “He thinks he’s a scientist or a military commander. He told Mom that family is a mechanism that requires strict calibration. Whenever anyone stepped out of line, he used isolation to break them. Mom... Mom was so terrified of him that she started helping him just so he wouldn't turn on her.”

“Why didn’t you come to me with this earlier, Leo?” I demanded, grabbing his forearm. “Why did you let my son sit in that house with that monster?!”

“Because he told me he’d destroy you!” Leo sobbed, putting his head in his hands. “He showed me mortgage documents—he bought your apartment building through a shell corporation two years ago, David! He owned your lease! He said if I ever opened my mouth to you, he’d evict you, call Child Protective Services, and use his judge friends to have Kevin placed in foster care!”

The blood drained completely from my face.

Eric hadn't just married my mother; he had quietly built a web around my entire life, waiting for the moment I tried to resist so he could pull the strings tight and strangle us.

“Does Sterling know about this binder?” I asked, clutching the leather book to my chest.

“No,” Leo said, wiping his nose. “Eric thinks it’s still in the floor safe. He doesn't know I took it.”

“We’re going straight to Detective Vance,” I said, standing up. “Leo, you’re coming with me. You’re going to give a full statement.”

“What about Mom?” Leo asked, his eyes wide with fear. “If Sterling finds out I took this, he’ll make Mom take the fall. He’ll say Mom was the one who wrote it, or that she was the one abusing Kevin!”

I looked down at the black ledger in my hand.

“Mom made her choice when she carried that key in her purse,” I said coldly. “Now we have to make ours.”

We drove directly to the Sheriff’s Department. Detective Vance called in Prosecutor Amanda Vance—an aggressive, sharp prosecutor known for handling high-profile domestic abuse cases—to review the binder.

As Prosecutor Vance flipped through the pages, her face turned from professional calm to utter disgust.

“This changes everything,” Prosecutor Vance declared, slamming the binder shut. “This isn't a simple child discipline dispute. This is a documented pattern of chronic, premeditated felony abuse and torture. I’m revoking his bail request immediately.”

She picked up her desk phone and dialed a short extension.

“Get me the judge on duty,” Prosecutor Vance said into the receiver. “I need an emergency search warrant for the Vance estate on Blackwood Drive. And issue a warrant for the immediate arrest of Eric Vance on additional counts of torture and kidnapping.”

I stood in the office doorway, holding Leo’s shaking shoulder. For the first time since yesterday afternoon, I felt a faint sliver of hope cut through the darkness.

But I knew Eric. Men like him don't surrender when they are cornered. They burn the whole house down.
