Chapter 8 - Denver Skies

The Mile High City looked breathtaking under a sprawling canopy of brilliant blue autumn skies, framed by the jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains in the distance.

Our new home in the Cherry Creek neighborhood was a sunlit, modern loft with exposed brick walls, floor-to-ceiling windows, and enough space for a home office where I could finally practice forensic accounting on my own terms—seeking out financial predators and protecting people who couldn't protect themselves.

Six months after the trial in Virginia concluded with Vanessa accepting a twenty-year plea agreement without the possibility of parole for federal wire fraud and grand larceny, Daniel and I decided to hold a celebration.

It wasn't a massive, suffocating social gathering like the graduation party in Alexandria.

Instead, it was an intimate dinner party on the spacious rooftop terrace of our loft building. The warm string lights overhead cast a soft glow across a long wooden table filled with close friends, colleagues from my new firm, and Grace Donovan, who had flown out from D.C. just for the occasion.

There were no forced smiles. There was no stepmother lurking in the shadows, waiting to criticize my posture or remind me of my place.

I wore a simple emerald-green silk dress, and around my neck rested my mother’s pearl necklace—not worn as a symbol of inherited obedience, but as a reclaimed heirloom of strength, resilience, and love.

When the sun dipped below the mountains, painting the sky in vibrant shades of amber and violet, Daniel stood up tapped his water glass with a silver spoon.

The table quieted, everyone turning toward us with warm, expectant smiles.

“To most people,” Daniel began, looking directly into my eyes across the table, “auditing is about numbers, ledgers, and cold equations. But to Claire, it’s about truth. It’s about ensuring that the balance sheet of life always reflects integrity, resilience, and justice.”

He raised his glass. “To Claire—who survived the storm, balanced every ledger, and built a future no one can ever control.”

“To Claire!” everyone chorused, raising their glasses high against the backdrop of the illuminated Denver skyline.

I smiled, raising my glass in return, feeling the warmth of Daniel’s hand as he slid his arm around my waist. The past was fully settled, the accounts were balanced, and for the first time in my life, every single tomorrow belonged entirely to me.
