Chapter 9 - The Hammer of Justice

The panel of judges deliberated for less than two hours.

When they returned to the bench, the atmosphere inside the courtroom was thick with solemn anticipation.

"Will the defendants please rise for sentencing," Justice Alarcón commanded.

Mónica and Rodrigo stood up, their knees trembling violently under their jumpsuit trousers.

Justice Alarcón adjusted her glasses and looked down from the high bench with absolute authority.

"Mónica Flores," Justice Alarcón began, her voice echoing clearly off the marble walls. "You exploited the sacred position of a wife and caregiver to inflict unthinkable physical, emotional, and financial cruelty upon a defenseless elder. You acted with cold, premeditated malice, prioritizing greed over human life."

The judge tapped her gavel firmly.

"For the charges of attempted murder through medical neglect, felony elder abuse, organized fraud, and extortion, I sentence you to thirty-four years in state prison, without eligibility for early parole. Furthermore, you are ordered to pay three million pesos in civil restitution."

Mónica screamed, a guttural wail of despair, as she collapsed into her seat, her body shaking uncontrollably.

"Rodrigo Salgado," Justice Alarcón continued, turning to the trembling man. "For the charges of criminal conspiracy, grand real estate fraud, money laundering, and subornation of a public official, I sentence you to twenty-eight years in state prison."

The judge hit the wooden block again.

"Regarding the property located in Coyoacán, registered under deed 4402," Justice Alarcón declared, "this court officially voids the fraudulent transfer. The title is restored fully, unconditionally, and permanently to Doña Amalia Miller, with all corporate liens expunged from the Public Registry."

BANG.

The sound of the final gavel strike resonated through the courtroom like a declaration of absolute freedom.

Bailiffs immediately grabbed Mónica and Rodrigo, dragging them toward the heavy iron doors leading to the subterranean transport cells. As Mónica was dragged past our row, she caught my eye, her face streaked with tears and red splotches.

"Mateo! Forgive me! Please! Mateo!" she begged.

I didn't say a word. I simply turned my back on her, wrapping my arms around my mother as the gallery erupted into applause.
