Chapter 6 - THE FIRST BIRTHDAY AND THE HAPPY ENDING

December of the following year.

The snow was falling softly outside our windows, turning the streets of Brentwood into a quiet winter wonderland.

Inside our living room, the air was filled with the rich, buttery scent of vanilla cake and the gentle chatter of family and close friends.

Lucas was turning one year old.

He was a tumbling, laughing, unstoppable ball of energy, chasing our golden retriever around the coffee table with a sticky piece of blue frosting smeared across his cheek.

I stood by the kitchen island, pouring a glass of sparkling cider, watching Olivia chase after him with a napkin in her hand.

She was laughing, her dark hair pulled back in a messy bun, wearing a comfortable wool sweater and jeans. She didn't care about her appearance in that moment; she only cared about catching our son before he face-planted into the toy basket.

As she scooped Lucas up into her arms, lifting him high into the air until he shrieked with delighted laughter, she caught me looking at her across the room.

She smiled—a slow, radiant, beautiful smile that carried the entire history of our survival.

She walked over to me, carrying Lucas on her hip, and rested her head gently against my shoulder.

“What are you thinking about, Mr. Carter?” she whispered.

“I was just thinking,” I said, wrapping my arms around both of them, pulling them close against my chest, “about how lucky I am. And how glad I am that Dr. Foster burst through that door.”

Olivia’s expression softened. She reached out, taking my hand and pressing it against Lucas’s warm, beating heart.

“We survived the worst day of our lives,” she said softly, looking up into my eyes. “And because of it, we know what real love looks like. It’s not about perfection, Daniel. It’s about fighting for each other when the lights go out.”

Lucas let out a happy gurgle, grabbing a handful of my shirt and pulling himself up to give me a wet, sloppy kiss on the cheek.

Outside, the snow continued to fall, blanketing the world in pristine white. Inside, our home was warm, glowing, and completely unbreakable. We had walked through the fire, and on the other side, we had found a love that nothing could ever tear apart.
