Chapter 5 - The Breaking of the Cage

The facility began to self-destruct as I pulled Sophie from the pod. As if triggered by the disconnection, the heavy blast doors began to cycle, and the overhead sprinklers deployed a thick, fire-retardant foam that coated the floors in a slippery, suffocating layer. Sophie was deathly cold, her body limp, but as I wrapped her in my jacket and pressed her against my chest, she let out a small, jagged, shuddering breath. The sound was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard—a real, human sound that cut through the sterile, mechanical hum of the dying machines.

Mark arrived in the loading bay just as we were stumbling toward the exit, flanked by a security team that looked more like paramilitary drones than men. He didn't look like my husband; his face was a mask of cold, intellectual disappointment. He saw only the failure of his data, not the life of his child.

"You’ve ruined everything, Emily," he said, his voice echoing over the roar of the alarms. "She was finally perfect. She never argued, she never got sick, she never defied me. She was the first successful upload. You are bringing her back to a world of suffering, of aging, of death."

"She was never yours to play god with!" I screamed back, my voice raw. I pulled a canister of pressurized coolant from the wall—a piece of the lab's infrastructure Elias had identified as a potential sabotage point—and smashed it against the floor near Mark's feet.

The resulting blast of sub-zero fog exploded upward, instantly blinding the guards and freezing the mechanical locking mechanisms of the heavy cargo doors. Mark shielded his eyes, cursing as the temperature plummeted. In the chaos of the whiteout, I didn't fight; I ran. I shoved open the side hatch we had identified during our surveillance, the icy air of the night biting at our skin. We scrambled into the waiting van where Elias was gunning the engine, his hands white-knuckled on the wheel. As we tore away from the warehouse, the entire complex shuddered, the power grid collapsing in a sequence of blue-white electrical arcs that lit up the horizon like a thunderstorm trapped underground.
