Chapter 5 - THE RECKONING OF THE PAST

The next morning, the sun broke over Westchester County with a brilliant, blinding clarity that made the melting ice on the trees sparkle like diamonds.

I sat at the breakfast island in the renovated kitchen, wearing a soft cashmere sweater—my own, retrieved from the dry cleaners before Vanessa could touch it—sipping fresh coffee while my father reviewed a stack of financial portfolios spread across the marble counter.

“The board of Vance Technologies convened at 7:00 AM,” my father reported, not looking up from his tablet. “They unanimously voted to strip Daniel of his title, revoke his stock options, and rename the entity Sterling-Sterling Medical & Tech, integrating it directly into our philanthropic health initiative.”

“And Vanessa?” I asked, slicing an avocado.

“Her family’s boutique consulting firm has already severed all ties with her. Her father called me thirty minutes ago, apologizing profusely, practically begging me not to let Sterling Capital crush their remaining assets in retaliation for her association with Daniel.”

I nodded slowly, feeling a strange sense of detachment. It was amazing how quickly loyalty evaporated when the money ran out and the handcuffs clicked. Daniel and Vanessa had believed their cleverness made them untouchable. They had mistaken kindness for weakness and silence for ignorance.

“You know, Evie,” my father said, setting his tablet down and looking at me intently, “the doctor called me after the security team brought you in last night. He said the stress of the eviction could have induced premature labor.”

I placed my hand gently over my belly. “I know. But I think she knew her mother needed to finish a very important piece of business first.”

My father chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound of genuine pride. “She’s going to be a Sterling through and through. Unstoppable.”

Around noon, David arrived with a heavy stack of documents for my signature.

“Everything is secure, Evelyn,” David said, handing me a sleek black pen. “Daniel’s assets have been fully seized under civil forfeiture laws related to corporate embezzlement. The house is legally and exclusively yours—or rather, your daughter’s trust. Daniel doesn't even own the clothes he was wearing when the police picked him up; those were purchased with corporate credit cards linked to embezzled funds.”

I signed the final deed transfer, my signature steady and clear.

“What happens next for Daniel?” I asked.

“Arraignment is scheduled for tomorrow morning at the White Plains federal courthouse,” David replied. “Given the scale of the wire fraud and the international shell companies, bail will be denied as a flight risk. He’s looking at twelve to fifteen years minimum.”

I closed the folder, handing it back to David. “I don't want to hear about his trial updates unless they directly affect the custody of my daughter or the liquidation of the remaining corporate assets.”

“Understood, Evelyn,” David said respectfully, bowing his head slightly before turning to leave the room.
