Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

The peace was fragile, and it shattered on a Wednesday afternoon.
Clara was in the kitchen showing Theo how to fold napkins into swans when the front door slammed open. A woman stepped into the foyer, draped in designer fur, her heels clicking against the marble like gunfire. It was Evelyn, Victor’s sister-in-law, who had spent the last six months trying to convince a family court that Victor was unfit for custody.
"Victor!" she shrieked, her voice echoing through the grand hall. "I heard you hired another girl from the streets. This is an embarrassment."
The boys froze. Mason’s hand tightened on the linen napkin.
Clara stood up, smoothing her apron. She walked into the foyer, her movements measured. She didn't look like a woman who was broke or desperate; she looked like the guardian of the gate.
"Mr. Hale is in a meeting," Clara said, her voice steady. "And the children are currently in a lesson."
Evelyn sneered, looking Clara up and down with calculated disdain. "A lesson? Is that what we’re calling it? I’ve seen the reports, darling. You’re a placeholder. A desperate woman taking a paycheck until the court finally realizes these boys belong with family, not a nanny."
"The boys belong where they are loved," Clara countered. "And right now, that is here."
"Loved?" Evelyn laughed. "They’re wild animals."

From the top of the stairs, Mason spoke. His voice was cold, stripped of his usual mischief. "We’re not animals, Aunt Evelyn. And we’re certainly not yours."
Evelyn gasped, turning to see all four boys standing on the landing, their faces masks of unified defiance. Clara didn't need to say a word. She had given them a sense of belonging, and they had finally found the strength to defend their home. Evelyn turned on her heel and stormed out, but the damage was done—the boys were trembling. Clara went to them, wrapping her arms around the group, holding them together as they weathered the storm.
