Chapter 4 – The Family Group Chat

The hospital room became so quiet that I could hear the soft beeping of Isabel's heart monitor.

No one moved.

Detective Marcus Hale opened the first screenshot from the flash drive.

The image filled the laptop screen.

At the top was the title of a family group chat.

Birthday Queens 👑

Members:

Denise

Greg

Morgan

Alyssa

Abby

Shane

Isabel wasn't in it.

Christopher wasn't in it.

Neither was I.

Detective Hale looked at Shane.

"Are these authentic?"

Shane nodded immediately.

"I exported them from Morgan's phone."

"How?"

"She left it unlocked."

"Were you given permission?"

"No."

He swallowed.

"But I couldn't keep pretending I hadn't seen them."

Detective Hale nodded once.

"I'll deal with the admissibility later."

He clicked the first message.

Denise:

The trust unlocks on Friday morning.

Three days together is all we need.

Another message.

Morgan:

She'll never say no.

Greg:

As long as Rebecca doesn't come.

Denise:

She won't. Rebecca still thinks everyone's nice.

My hands began shaking.

Christopher leaned forward, his jaw tightening with every new message.

Then Detective Hale opened another screenshot.

This one had been sent five days before the trip.

Morgan:

What if she checks her account?

Denise:

Then keep her busy.

Champagne. Spa. Shopping.

By the time she notices, we'll already be home.

Another.

Greg:

How much do you think she'll spend?

Denise:

Spend?

We're not asking.

She's buying gifts.

My stomach lurched.

The words looked unreal.

Not because they were unbelievable.

Because they were so casual.

As if they were planning brunch instead of stealing from an eighteen-year-old girl.

Detective Hale continued scrolling.

Each screenshot made things worse.

Alyssa:

Will she actually sign?

Denise:

She signs everything.

Just don't let her read it.

Christopher slammed his fist onto the bedside table.

The sound made Isabel jump.

"I'm sorry," he said immediately, taking her hand.

She looked from him to me.

"Dad..."

His eyes filled with tears.

"I should've listened to your mother."

The Truth Begins to Return

Dr. Warren entered to check Isabel's vitals.

She noticed the tension in the room immediately.

"I'll only be a minute."

As she adjusted the IV, Isabel frowned.

"Mom..."

"Yes?"

"I keep remembering little pieces."

"What kind of pieces?"

She squeezed her eyes shut.

"The jewelry store."

"The lady asked if I wanted insurance."

"And I said..."

She stopped.

"You said what?"

"I said..."

"...I wasn't buying anything."

Everyone in the room froze.

Dr. Warren looked up from the chart.

"What happened then?"

Isabel's breathing quickened.

"Denise laughed."

"What did she say?"

"'You're adorable.'"

"'Just sign so we can leave.'"

A tear slid down Isabel's cheek.

"I thought..."

"...I thought maybe I had forgotten."

"You hadn't forgotten anything," I whispered.

"You were manipulated."

Hotel Security Calls

Detective Hale's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then looked directly at us.

"The hotel security director wants us there."

"Why?"

"They found another camera."

An hour later we arrived back at the Grand Crest Resort.

The lobby looked very different from the night before.

Police officers stood near every entrance.

Guests whispered as they walked past.

Several employees recognized us immediately.

The security director, Angela Ruiz, greeted Detective Hale.

"I think you should see this."

She led us into the surveillance office.

Rows of monitors covered one wall.

Angela inserted a security key.

"This camera isn't connected to the public hallways."

"It overlooks the executive elevators."

She pressed play.

The timestamp read:

6:14 p.m.

The elevator doors opened.

Denise stepped out first.

Morgan followed carrying shopping bags.

Greg carried two jewelry boxes.

Alyssa rolled a designer suitcase that definitely hadn't been there when they arrived.

Then...

Two hotel employees pushed a luggage cart overflowing with expensive purchases.

Detective Hale frowned.

"Where's Isabel?"

Angela fast-forwarded.

Thirty seconds later—

The elevator opened again.

This time Isabel stepped out.

Alone.

She looked unsteady.

She paused, clearly unsure which direction to walk.

Denise appeared from the hallway.

She took Isabel gently by the elbow.

Smiled.

Then guided her away.

Like someone helping a tired relative.

Except...

Angela zoomed in.

Isabel wasn't walking normally.

Her knees buckled twice.

Denise tightened her grip each time.

Christopher whispered,

"Oh, God..."

The footage continued.

The family entered Suite 1804.

But five minutes later—

Denise came back out.

Holding Isabel's room key.

She walked down the hallway.

Unlocked Room 1811.

Went inside.

Two minutes later she emerged alone.

Locked the door.

Put the key into her purse.

My blood ran cold.

"She locked my daughter inside."

Angela nodded slowly.

"It appears so."

The Receipt That Changed Everything

A uniformed officer entered carrying a small envelope.

"Detective."

"We found this."

Inside was another receipt.

Folded into quarters.

It had been discovered in the trash beside the concierge desk.

Unlike the others...

This one wasn't for shopping.

It was from the hotel pharmacy.

Item Purchased:

Prescription Sleep Aid

Liquid Form

Purchased by:

Denise Walker

Time:

11:42 a.m.

The same morning Isabel had checked in.

Detective Hale looked at Dr. Warren.

"Could this be what was in her system?"

The doctor examined the label.

"It could contribute."

"But the concentration in Isabel's blood suggests it was mixed with alcohol."

She looked at me.

"Someone wanted her awake."

"Just not capable of making informed decisions."

Christopher Makes a Choice

As we left the security office, Christopher stopped walking.

He stared out the window toward the ocean.

For a long time he said nothing.

Finally he spoke.

"I've defended my sister my entire life."

I quietly waited.

"When we were kids..."

"Our parents always believed Denise."

"Even when she lied."

He laughed bitterly.

"I guess I never stopped."

He turned toward me.

"I almost believed her yesterday."

"You didn't."

"I almost did."

He looked toward Isabel, who was resting in a wheelchair.

"That almost cost our daughter everything."

He took out his phone.

Dialed a number.

"Hello?"

It was Denise.

She answered cheerfully.

"Chris! Have the police finally calmed Rebecca down?"

His voice was ice.

"Don't call her Rebecca."

A pause.

"What?"

"You'll call her Mrs. Carter."

Silence.

"And you'll never call my daughter again."

Denise laughed.

"Oh, don't be dramatic."

"You'll forgive me."

Christopher answered without hesitation.

"No."

Then he said something I never thought I'd hear.

"If you ever come near Isabel again..."

"...I'll testify against you myself."

He hung up.

Blocked her number.

Then quietly slipped his wedding band off his finger.

I frowned.

"What are you doing?"

He stared at the ring.

"My father gave me this."

"Every time I looked at it..."

"...I remembered he always said family comes first."

He looked at Isabel.

"I finally understand."

He slid the ring back onto his finger.

"I was just wearing it wrong."

Just then, Detective Hale's phone buzzed again.

He read the message.

His expression hardened.

"What is it?" I asked.

He looked at all three of us before answering.

"We just subpoenaed the resort's financial records."

"And?"

"They confirm every purchase."

I let out a slow breath.

"So we can recover the money."

"Yes."

He paused.

"But that's not the important part."

"What is?"

He turned the laptop around.

On the screen was one final transaction that had not appeared on Isabel's account alerts.

It wasn't a purchase.

It wasn't a transfer.

It was an application.

Submitted electronically at 6:52 p.m., while Isabel was barely able to stand.

The title at the top read:

REQUEST TO ADD AUTHORIZED ACCOUNT USER

Applicant:

Denise Walker

If it had been approved...

May you like

Denise wouldn't have stolen Isabel's inheritance just once.

She would have gained legal access to the entire trust account.
