Chapter 5 - The Siege

The panic room was hidden behind a bookshelf in the basement. It was made of reinforced steel and stocked with a week’s worth of supplies.
Claire held Ellie tightly to her chest, sitting on the edge of a cot. Above them, the heavy thud of boots and muffled shouts echoed through the floorboards.
"Mommy, is it a storm?" Ellie asked, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
"Yes, baby," Claire lied, her voice trembling. "It's just a storm."
Upstairs, Julian Moretti was fighting a war from his wheelchair.
He sat in the center of his fortified office, surrounded by screens displaying the estate’s security cameras. Marcus had sent a hit squad—twenty men armed to the teeth, hoping to catch the "crippled king" off guard.
They underestimated the king.
"Dante, flank them on the east corridor," Julian barked into a headset, his fingers flying across a control panel that locked down steel shutters across the mansion's windows. "Arthur, trigger the tear gas in the main foyer."
Julian wasn't just surviving; he was orchestrating a flawless defense. His mind, sharpened by years of ruthless syndicate politics, calculated every move before Marcus’s men even made it.
But as he watched the monitors, one thought pounded in his head louder than the gunfire.
Claire. Ellie.
If Marcus breached the basement, he would use them. Julian knew how this world worked. Weaknesses were exploited. And for the first time in his life, Julian had a weakness that terrified him.
The estate defenses held. Within an hour, sirens wailed in the distance. Marcus’s surviving men fled, realizing that Julian Moretti’s mind was far more dangerous than his legs ever were.
When the house went quiet, Julian wheeled himself to the basement elevator.
He punched in the code to the panic room. The heavy steel door slid open.
Claire was sitting on the floor, holding a sleeping Ellie. When she saw Julian, unhurt, she let out a broken sob.
Julian wheeled forward, abandoning all pretense, all boundaries. He reached out, his strong hands gripping Claire’s shoulders, pulling her gently forward until her forehead rested against his chest.

"I've got you," Julian whispered into her hair. "You're safe. I swear to God, you're safe."
Claire closed her eyes, breathing in the scent of gunpowder and expensive cologne, realizing in that terrifying moment that she had fallen completely, irrevocably in love with him.
