Chapter 8 - The Swallow in Flight

One year later.

The city of Chicago was blanketed in a blanket of clean, white winter snow.

On the fourth floor of a bright, modern architectural firm downtown, Élise sat at a large drafting table covered in blueprints, digital monitors, and colored pencils. She wore a sharp, professional navy blazer, her dark hair falling neatly over her shoulders.

She was no longer the terrified bride hiding in a corner, paralyzed by the ghosts of her past.

Working late into the evening, she reached out and picked up her coffee mug. As she did, the sleeve of her blazer slipped back, revealing the delicate silver pendant of a swallow resting against her collarbone—shining brightly under the warm desk lamp.

Her phone buzzed on the corner of the desk.

She picked it up. It was a text message from an unfamiliar number, forwarded through her legal counsel.

From: Nathan Carter (ID: #48921-A) State Correctional Facility, Marion.

“I saw a bird outside the yard today. It looked like the one your mother gave you. I hope you're happy, Élise. I hope you remember every single day what it cost to get here.”

Élise stared at the screen for a long, quiet moment.

She didn't feel fear. She didn't feel the crushing weight of panic that used to seize her chest whenever she heard his name.

She opened her message settings, clicked on the options menu, and pressed a single button: Block Contact.

Then, she deleted the message permanently.

She locked her phone, placed it face down on the desk, and turned back toward her blueprints. The complex lines of steel, concrete, and glass stretched out before her—a structure designed to stand firm, to endure the heaviest storms, and to reach upward toward the light.

Élise picked up her drafting pen, took a deep, steady breath, and began to draw.
