Chapter 5 - The Storm Inside the Walls

While Dante and his capos moved out into the stormy Chicago night to dismantle Marco Caruso’s supply lines, Maya remained in the third-floor medical suite, keeping a constant vigil over Ethan.

The boy was sleeping deeply now, his breathing steady and untroubled for the first time in weeks. The toxic residue was slowly clearing from his system under Maya’s IV fluid regimen, his pale cheeks regaining a faint, healthy flush.

Maya sat in a leather armchair beside the bed, a cup of cold coffee growing ignored on the side table, her eyes heavy with exhaustion.

Suddenly, a strange sound echoed from the hallway outside.

Not the heavy, reassuring boots of Dante’s guards.

A soft, muffled thud.

Then, absolute silence.

Maya’s body went completely rigid. She slipped out of the chair, her footsteps silent against the plush rug, and moved toward the heavy oak door of the suite. She pressed her ear against the wood.

Nothing.

She reached out and slowly turned the brass doorknob. The latch clicked open with agonizing loudness.

She peered out into the dim hallway. The amber emergency wall-lights cast long, eerie shadows across the portraits of dead Caruso patriarchs.

Ten feet down the hall, slumped against the wall beside a marble pillar, was Sal Viganò—one of Dante’s most trusted capos. A dark, ugly stain of blood was spreading rapidly across his white dress shirt.

Maya gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth to silence the sound.

Intruders.

They hadn't just secured the estate; someone inside the inner circle had opened the back security gates.

Before Maya could pull her head back inside the room, a gloved hand shot out from the blind spot beside the doorframe, wrapping around her mouth and yanking her violently out into the hallway.

Maya struggled fiercely, kicking backward with her heels, but an arm like a steel bar locked around her waist, lifting her off the floor.

“Quiet, nurse,” a gravelly, unfamiliar voice hissed in her ear. “Or the kid gets a bullet right through the mattress.”

Maya froze. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.

From the shadow of the corridor stepped a man in a black tactical balaclava, holding a suppressed automatic pistol. Behind him stood two more mercenaries, their weapons raised, moving with cold, practiced precision toward Ethan’s room.

It was an assassination squad. Marco Caruso’s final, desperate gamble to wipe out the bloodline and eliminate the witness who found the poison.

The lead gunman lowered Maya’s feet to the floor, keeping his knife pressed lightly against her throat. “Open the door to the medical suite,” he ordered. “And don't make a sound, or I’ll cut you from ear to ear before I put one in the boy’s head.”

Maya’s mind raced at a thousand miles an hour. Her hands trembled, not from fear, but from a cold, blinding surge of adrenaline.

She looked at the door handle of the suite. Then she looked at the heavy metal oxygen tank strapped to the mobile crash cart sitting just inside the doorway.

She nodded slowly, pretending to submit.

“Okay,” Maya whispered, her voice shaking just enough to sell the performance. “Don't shoot. Just... don't hurt him.”

The gunman shoved her forward toward the door handle.

Maya reached out, gripped the brass knob, and turned it. The door swung inward.

As the lead gunman stepped past her into the room, raising his weapon toward Ethan’s bed, Maya didn't hesitate.

She spun around, grabbed the heavy metal oxygen tank from the crash cart, and hurled it with all her remaining strength directly into the back of the second gunman’s knees.

CRASH!

The man shrieked as his legs buckled under the crushing weight of the steel cylinder, collapsing hard onto the hardwood floor and dropping his automatic rifle.

The lead gunman whipped around, raising his pistol toward Maya, but before he could pull the trigger, a thunderous roar echoed from the grand staircase at the end of the hall.

“DROP YOUR WEAPONS!”

Dante Caruso appeared at the head of the stairs.

He wasn't wearing his cashmere sweater anymore. He wore a heavy leather holster rig strapped over a black tactical shirt, dual Beretta pistols drawn and aimed dead center at the intruders. Behind him swarmed a dozen armed capos, cutting off any escape route.

The lead gunman panicked, swinging his weapon toward Maya.

BANG! BANG!

Two suppressed shots cracked through the hallway.

The lead gunman’s eyes widened in shock as twin crimson blooms blossomed across his tactical vest. He dropped his weapon, staggered backward, and collapsed lifelessly onto the Persian runner.

The third mercenary threw his hands in the air, dropping to his knees. “I surrender! I surrender!”

“Take him to the vault,” Dante ordered, his voice cold enough to shatter glass, not even looking at the captive as his men swarmed the hallway and zip-tied the assassin.

Dante didn't slow down. He sprinted past the blood and the bodies, bursting through the doorway of the medical suite.

His eyes frantically searched the room until they landed on Maya, standing unharmed beside the bed, shielding a waking, terrified Ethan with her own body.

Dante holstered his pistols, crossed the room in two strides, and pulled them both into his arms—crushing Maya and his son against his chest in a desperate, fierce embrace that finally broke the last remaining walls around his battered soul.

“Are you hurt?” Dante demanded, his hands frantically checking Maya’s arms, her shoulders, her face, as if needing to see the physical proof that she was whole. “Maya, did they touch you?”

“I’m fine,” Maya whispered, tears finally spilling over her lashes as she gripped the lapel of his tactical shirt. “We’re both fine.”

Dante closed his eyes, pressing his forehead against hers, breathing out a shuddering sigh of pure relief.

“It’s over,” Dante murmured against her lips. “Marco’s men at the docks surrendered an hour ago. My cousin is in custody. The syndicate council has officially recognized Ethan’s absolute succession and my unassailable authority. Nobody will ever breach these walls again.”

May you like

Maya looked up into his stormy gray eyes, seeing no monsters there anymore—only a father, a protector, and a man who had burned an empire down to the ground just to keep them safe.

She leaned up, and for the first time, kissed him back.
