Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Execution

The emergency board meeting of Cross Hotels & Resorts was convened at 10:00 AM in the sleek, glass-walled penthouse boardroom downtown.

Ordinarily, this room was Daniel’s favorite place in the world. Sitting at the head of the polished mahogany table, presiding over vice presidents and regional directors, made him feel like an industrial titan. But today, the air in the room was thick with panic and impending doom.

The doors burst open, and Daniel rushed in, disheveled, his tie crooked, panting for breath. Behind him walked his shaken mother, flanked by their corporate defense attorney, Marcus Vance.

“What is the meaning of this?” Daniel shouted, slamming his hands onto the table. “The executive board just received an emergency notice of default from Hartwell Capital! You can't call our bridge loan! We have a three-year grace period!”

At the opposite end of the table, sitting comfortably in the chairman’s seat, sat Robert Hart. Beside him sat my mother, Evelyn, reviewing a digital tablet displaying corporate audit logs.

Robert did not even look up from his papers. He simply raised a finger, and the head of corporate compliance stood up.

“Mr. Cross, paragraph fourteen of your underwriting agreement explicitly states that any material criminal indictment, felony charge, or active domestic abuse investigation involving primary shareholders or immediate family members constitutes an immediate, un-curable default of all corporate debt,” the compliance officer recited calmly.

Marcus Vance, the family attorney, adjusted his glasses, staring frantically at the documents. He looked at Robert, his face draining of color as the pieces clicked together in his mind.

“Hartwell... Hartwell Capital,” Marcus whispered, his voice trembling. “You’re... Robert Hart. The private equity titan. But Claire said her parents were—!”

“My daughter told your client nothing because your client never bothered to ask,” Robert interrupted, finally lifting his gaze. His eyes fixed on Daniel with predatory intensity. “You married a woman you believed was penniless and unprotected. You watched your mother torture her, and you helped hold her down while she was chemically burned in your own foyer.”

Vivian clutched her designer handbag, her voice shrill with hysteria. “This is a conspiracy! You’re manipulating the courts! You can't do this to us! We are the Cross family!”

“You were the Cross family,” Evelyn Hart said softly, looking up from her tablet. Her voice was like ice. “As of eleven minutes ago, Hartwell Capital has exercised its collateral seizure rights. Every hotel, every real estate holding, every bank account, and every corporate asset bearing the Cross name is now legally frozen and transferred to our portfolio.”

Daniel grabbed the edge of the table, his knuckles turning white. He stared at me—yes, I had walked into the boardroom behind my parents, wearing dark sunglasses over my bandaged eyes, leaning on a cane, but standing impossibly tall.

“Claire...” Daniel breathed, his voice cracking with a mixture of terror and disbelief. “Claire, please. You’re my wife. Tell them to stop this. It was just a joke! Mom didn't mean it!”

I stopped at the foot of the table, tilted my head upward, and smiled beneath my bandages.

“One day married, Daniel,” I whispered, echoing his mother’s cruel words from the night before. “And you already smell like you're bankrupt.”
