Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

The weeks following the Gala were a slow-motion car crash for Connor and Melinda. With the Board of the Horizon project officially cutting ties with his firm, the rumors of his financial mismanagement reached the ears of his other clients. One by one, the contracts were pulled.

In the safety of their suburban home, the "perfect family" dynamic dissolved. I didn't need to witness it to know; the silence from their social media accounts told the story. Melinda, who had spent a year broadcasting their happiness, went dark.

I was sitting in my office, working on the next phase of the project, when I received a notification—a video call from an unknown number. I answered, expecting a journalist, but it was Melinda.

She looked different. The makeup was gone, her hair was unbrushed, and behind her, I could hear the muffled sound of an argument—Connor’s voice raised, cold and accusatory.

"Are you happy now?" she asked, her voice cracking. "He's losing everything. The firm is insolvent. The lawyers are here."

"I'm not happy, Melinda," I said, looking at my blueprints. "I’m just working. Everything that is happening to you is a consequence of your own choices. You built a life on a foundation of sand, and now you’re surprised that it’s collapsing."

"He blames me," she whispered, a tear tracing a path through the exhaustion on her face. "He says if I hadn't pushed him to compete with you, he would have been fine."

"He’s not wrong," I said, ending the call before she could say anything else. I didn't feel triumph. I felt an immense sense of relief, as if the last year of holding my breath had finally come to an end.

The stage was set for the final act. I had reclaimed my life, not by destroying them, but by simply refusing to be the victim in their story.
