Chapter 4 - The Quiet Storm

When Ethan and Rebecca returned home at 5:00 PM, carrying shopping bags from high-end boutiques on Michigan Avenue, they expected to find Emily cowering in the bedroom, apologetic and eager to please.

Instead, they walked into an apartment that felt like a tomb.

The kitchen floor had been meticulously cleaned. The spilled stew was gone. Emily sat at the dining room table, sipping a cup of chamomile tea, wearing a long silk loungewear set that covered her burned legs.

“Well, at least you had the sense to clean up your mess,” Rebecca remarked, tossing her shopping bags onto the sofa. “Honestly, Emily, your attitude today was appalling. Ethan tells me you still haven't apologized.”

Emily didn't look up from her teacup.

Ethan walked over, tossing his car keys onto the counter with a heavy sigh. “Come on, Em. Mom is trying to move past it, but you need to show some respect. We’re a family now. Mom wants to host a dinner party this Friday night with some of our closest family friends and business associates to formally introduce you to high society. You need to look your best.”

Emily finally raised her eyes, looking straight at her husband. Her gaze was so cold, so devoid of warmth, that Ethan actually stepped back half a step.

“A dinner party?” Emily asked softly.

“Yes,” Rebecca interjected, walking over with a smug smile. “And I’ve invited the senior partners from Ethan’s firm, along with several society columnists. You will wear the cream designer dress I bought you, you will keep your mouth shut unless spoken to, and you will make sure the appetizers are properly prepared this time. No cheap diner food.”

Emily took a slow sip of her tea.

“I’ll be there,” Emily said quietly.

Ethan smiled, instantly relieved, assuming his wife had finally broken under pressure. “See? Was that so hard? I knew you’d come around. Love you, babe.” He leaned down to kiss her forehead.

Emily didn't flinch, but inside her skin crawled at his touch.

“I love you too, Ethan,” Emily whispered. More than you will ever know.

Over the next three days, Emily played her part to absolute perfection. She smiled when spoken to, nodded politely while Rebecca dictated the menu for the upcoming Friday dinner party, and quietly nursed her healing burns out of sight.

Unknown to Ethan and Rebecca, Emily’s apartment had become a revolving door of legal couriers, IT specialists, and process servers.

Arthur Vance had filed emergency civil motions in the Cook County Circuit Court, securing a freeze on all joint credit applications Ethan had secretly attempted to open in Emily’s name. Furthermore, Arthur had subpoenaed the security footage from the apartment building lobby, capturing Rebecca letting herself in with the unauthorized code on Tuesday morning—complete with audio of her insults and the subsequent medical records from Emily’s urgent care visit documenting second-degree chemical and thermal burns.

The trap was fully built. The walls were up.

All that remained was Friday night.
