Chapter 5 - The Strike Back

The clock on Grandma Martha’s kitchen wall ticked loudly: 10:15 AM.

The safe-house living room had transformed into a makeshift command center. Julian Vance sat at the old oak dining table, his bruised face set in lines of absolute granite. He had used a landline telephone—plugged into the wall jack behind the sofa—to dial a secure, encrypted routing number connected to his head of private security, a man named Marcus Vance (no relation, but fiercely loyal).

“Marcus,” Julian said into the receiver, his voice dropping into the cold, authoritative baritone that had terrified Wall Street for a decade. “Listen to me very carefully. I am alive. No, don't ask how. I’m calling from a secure location.”

On the other end of the line, Marcus let out a sharp gasp of sheer disbelief and relief. “Boss?! Thank God! The board called an emergency quorum session for noon today. Arthur Sterling is moving to invoke Section 12-B to declare you permanently incapacitated and seize voting control of the merger!”

“I know,” Julian replied smoothly, his eyes glancing across the room toward Lily, who was sitting on the sofa meticulously cleaning the mud off her sneakers with an old toothbrush. “Sterling thinks he buried me. But he made one fatal mistake.”

“What’s that, sir?”

“He left me with a ten-year-old girl who knows how to open a trunk,” Julian said, a cold, predatory smile touching his lips. “Marcus, get your tactical team down to the Riverdale municipal library branch on Tenth Street in twenty minutes. Bring a secure satellite uplink terminal, a clean burner phone, and a fresh suit. We’re going to a board meeting.”

“Yes, sir!” Marcus barked, the relief in his voice instantly replaced by disciplined tactical focus. “We’ll be waiting.”

Julian hung up the phone. He stood up, walking over to the dining table where the tiny titanium flash drive lay beside the gold fountain pen.

He looked down at Lily.

“You realize,” Julian said quietly, “that once we walk into that boardroom, your life down by the salvage yard is going to change forever. Arthur Sterling and his partners won't go quietly. They’ll try to discredit us, sue us, and bury us. Are you sure you want to be in the middle of this war, Lily?”

Lily stopped cleaning her sneaker. She looked up, her dark eyes flashing with a fierce, unwavering light that reminded Julian of his own reflection twenty years ago when he was fighting his way out of poverty.

“Mr. Vance,” Lily said, her voice steady and clear. “You were locked in a trunk because you trusted the wrong people in suits. My grandma always taught me that if you find someone bleeding in the dark, you don't ask what kind of car they drive before you help them up. You help them finish the fight.”

Julian stared at her for a long moment. Then, slowly, the billionaire legendary for his coldness reached out and placed a large, warm hand on the top of her tangled brown hair.

“Let’s go crash a board meeting, Captain Morgan,” he said softly.
