Chapter 3 - The Public Fall

The Gala at the Starlight Plaza was the climax Adrian had envisioned for months. It was a black-tie affair meant to solidify his status as the city's new "power broker." He had invited the press, his board of directors, and the local elite. He intended to announce his divorce, introduce Celeste as his partner in both life and business, and reveal a massive, fabricated land development project that he claimed would cement his fortune.

I arrived an hour after the keynote speech was scheduled to begin. I didn't wear the mourning black of a scorned wife. I wore a gown of midnight blue, encrusted with stones that glittered like the stars, and diamonds that belonged to my mother’s collection—heirlooms that cost more than the house Adrian had stolen.

When I stepped into the ballroom, the room didn't just hush; it tilted. Adrian was on the podium, mid-sentence, talking about "new chapters" and "freedom." Then he saw me. His face went through a kaleidoscope of emotions: shock, then anger, then a flash of genuine, unadulterated fear.

Celeste, standing by his side, gripped her Birkin bag so hard her knuckles turned white.

I didn't stop at the entrance. I walked straight down the center aisle, my arm locked in my father’s. Julian Thorne was a titan of industry, a man whose presence alone could stop a boardroom meeting dead in its tracks. Behind us walked three men in sharp, charcoal suits—the Chief Investigator of the city’s Fraud Division and two federal agents.

"Adrian," I said, my voice projecting clearly through the hall’s sound system, which I had quietly ensured was synced to my microphone. "You look surprised."

"Evelyn," he sputtered, his face turning a sickly, mottled shade of red. "What... what are you doing here? You aren't invited."

"I don't need an invitation to my own assets, Adrian," I replied, standing at the base of the podium. I reached into my clutch and pulled out a single, thick document. "This is a Cease and Desist, followed by a notice of immediate foreclosure on the property you currently reside in. It appears you missed a few payments to the primary lender."

"That’s impossible!" he roared, turning to his silent board of directors. "The firm is liquid!"

"The firm," my father intervened, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that silenced the room, "was financed by Thorne Holdings. And Thorne Holdings has just exercised its right to liquidate all assets due to breach of fiduciary duty and criminal embezzlement."

The room erupted. Flashbulbs went off like a strobe light. Adrian’s partners were already on their phones, distancing themselves. Celeste tried to slink away, but she was blocked by the federal agents.

"Adrian Vale," the lead investigator said, stepping onto the stage, "you are under arrest for federal tax evasion, wire fraud, and the embezzlement of over four million dollars."

The transition from power broker to prisoner was instantaneous. I watched as the handcuffs clicked into place—a sharp, metallic sound that was, to me, the most beautiful music in the world. As they dragged him away, he looked at me, not with the arrogance of a man who had won a war, but with the hollow, desperate eyes of a man who had finally realized the game was rigged from the start.

Celeste, left alone on the stage, tried to stammer a defense, but the media had already turned their lenses on her, eager to document the fall of the mistress who had thought a Birkin bag was a suit of armor. I turned, took my father’s arm, and walked out of the ballroom. I didn't look back at the mess. I didn't need to. The fall was complete, and the view from the other side was nothing short of breathtaking.
