CHAPTER 4 — THE TRUTH BEHIND THE RULES

Lucía didn’t move at the end of the hallway.

She didn’t speak.

She didn’t blink.

She just stood there like she had been placed there on purpose—like the house itself had decided to reveal something it could no longer contain.

Then, slowly, she raised one finger to her lips.

A warning.

Silence.

Not because of us.

Because of them.

My heart hammered so loudly I was sure Esteban would wake up.

But he didn’t.

He was too still.

Too perfectly still.

Like someone trained to sleep through the exact moments they needed to miss.

Lucía stepped backward into the darkness.

Not running.

Not hiding.

Receding.

Like she was returning to a place she understood better than this house.

And then she was gone.

I waited.

One minute.

Five.

Ten.

Nothing.

Only the house breathing around me.

I couldn’t take it anymore.

Carefully, I got out of bed.

Every floorboard felt louder than it should have.

Every sound felt like a mistake.

I followed the hallway toward where I had seen her.

The guest room door was open.

Inside, Tomás was asleep.

But Lucía was not beside him.

The bed was untouched on her side.

Perfectly made.

As if she had never returned at all.

A cold pressure settled in my chest.

If she wasn’t here…

then where was she?

I turned back toward the hallway.

And that’s when I noticed it.

A small panel in the wall.

Something I had never paid attention to before.

It looked like a maintenance hatch.

But it was slightly ajar.

I hesitated.

Then pushed it open.

Inside was not what I expected.

Not pipes.

Not wiring.

But a narrow crawlspace.

Dark.

Confined.

And lined with marks on the wood—fresh scratches, as if something had been moved through there repeatedly.

My breath caught.

Because now I understood.

The house wasn’t just a house.

It had hidden movement.

Hidden access.

Hidden observation.

Then I heard it.

A faint sound behind me.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

I turned sharply—

And saw Esteban standing in the hallway.

Awake.

Watching me.

Not surprised.

Just… resigned.

“What are you doing?” I whispered.

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said quietly:

“You weren’t supposed to see that.”

My blood ran cold.

“So it’s real.”

He didn’t deny it.

That was the answer.

From somewhere deeper in the house, a soft metallic click echoed again.

But this time, I recognized it.

Not a door.

Not a lock.

A mechanism.

Something being engaged.

Something being checked.

Esteban stepped closer.

“We never talk about it,” he said.

My voice shook.

“Talk about what?”

He hesitated.

Then finally:

“The arrangement.”

My stomach dropped.

“What arrangement?”

He looked toward the crawlspace.

Then back at me.

And said the sentence that broke everything I thought I knew:

“Lucía isn’t sleeping between us because she wants to.”

A pause.

“She’s placed there.”

My mind refused to accept it.

“By who?”

Esteban’s jaw tightened.

And for the first time…

he looked afraid.

“By the people who watch houses like ours.”

Silence swallowed the hallway.

The word watch changed everything.

Not neighbors.

Not family.

Something larger.

Something organized.

Something patient.

Lucía suddenly appeared again behind Esteban.

I didn’t hear her arrive.

She just… was there.

And this time, her face was pale.

Exhausted.

But steady.

“You looked,” she said softly.

Not accusation.

Fact.

Esteban turned toward her.

“Lucía…”

She shook her head once.

“You weren’t supposed to see the crawlspace.”

I took a step back.

“So it’s true.”

Lucía finally met my eyes.

And for the first time, she looked human.

Tired.

Young.

Trapped.

“Yes,” she whispered.

My voice cracked.

“Who are they?”

Lucía swallowed.

Then said:

“They choose houses where people don’t ask questions.”

A pause.

“And they make sure we don’t ask.”

My mind raced.

“Why you? Why here?”

Lucía looked down.

Then answered quietly:

“Because I know what happens when you don’t follow.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Unforgiving.

Esteban finally spoke again.

“It’s not what you think.”

I laughed once—sharp, broken.

“Then explain it.”

He didn’t.

Because he couldn’t.

Lucía stepped closer to me.

And for the first time, she let go of the fear in her voice.

Not because it was gone.

But because she had accepted it.

“They don’t hurt us,” she said.

“They correct us.”

A pause.

“And if we don’t stay in the system… someone else replaces us.”

My body went cold.

“You mean… other wives?”

Lucía nodded slightly.

“Other families.”

Another pause.

“Other versions of the same house.”

The hallway felt smaller suddenly.

Like the walls had leaned in to listen.

Esteban whispered:

“This is why I told you not to look.”

I stared at him.

“You let this happen.”

He didn’t deny it.

And that was worse than any confession.

Lucía wiped her eyes quickly.

“We survive by following the pattern,” she said.

“And the pattern is simple.”

A pause.

“Don’t resist. Don’t question. Don’t break alignment.”

My voice broke.

“And if someone does?”

Silence.

No one answered immediately.

Because they didn’t need to.

From somewhere deep in the crawlspace…

another click echoed.

Louder this time.

Final.

Like a decision being made.

Lucía whispered:

“They know you looked.”

And for the first time…

I understood the real meaning of the seventeen nights.

Not sleep.

Not fear.

Not jealousy.

But observation.

Measurement.

Preparation.

Esteban grabbed my arm gently.

“We need to stop talking,” he said urgently.

But it was too late.

Because the house had already changed.

The lights flickered once.

Then stabilized.

And somewhere inside the walls…

something began moving again.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Approaching.

Lucía looked at me one last time.

And said softly:

“I’m sorry.”

Not for what had happened.

But for what was coming.

And in that moment…

I realized the truth was never hidden.

It was simply waiting for me to be ready to see it.

May you like

And now that I had…

the house was no longer going to pretend I hadn’t.
