Chapter 7 - The Reckoning in Chicago

Twenty-four hours later, the private hangar at Midway International Airport in Chicago was freezing, but the air inside the heated tarmac terminal crackled with lethal tension.

The sleek Gulfstream jet touched down through the winter murk, its engines screaming as it taxied toward the Valente private bay.

Inside the terminal, Dominic Valente stood with his hands locked behind his back, flanked by a dozen armed security enforcers in heavy black tactical gear. Beside him stood Maddie, wrapped in a heavy cashmere blanket, her color restored after a harrowing flight, though exhaustion shadowed her dark eyes.

The aircraft door hissed open, and Calo descended the metal stairs first, escorting a trembling, gray-haired man in a ruined Italian suit.

Vincenzo DeLuca—head of the eastern seaboard syndicate, architect of the Boston hit squad, and father of Serafina—was shoved forward onto the concrete floor of the hangar. His nose was broken, his bespoke suit stained with hydraulic fluid and snow.

Dominic walked slowly toward him, his boots clicking rhythmically against the polished concrete.

“Vincenzo,” Dominic said, his voice a soft, velvet blade. “I thought we had an understanding. You wanted shipping lanes in the Atlantic. I gave you the Atlantic. You wanted federal judicial appointments in New York. I cleared the bench for you.”

Vincenzo spat a streak of blood onto the concrete, glaring up at Dominic with venomous hatred. “You think a piece of paper and a handshake makes you king, Valente? My daughter was supposed to marry you. You were supposed to unite the syndicates!”

“Your daughter was a pawn in a game you weren't smart enough to win,” Dominic replied coldly. He turned his head slightly toward the open hangar doors, where a convoy of federal black-and-whites and unmarked FBI vehicles were pulling onto the tarmac in a synchronized sweep.

Vincenzo’s eyes widened in horror. “You... you ratted to the Feds?”

“I didn't rat,” Dominic corrected smoothly. “I provided the Department of Justice with twenty-four years of untainted, airtight financial records proving that every single port, warehouse, and shell company registered under the DeLuca name was funded by international narcotics trafficking and racketeering. The warrants were signed by three federal judges an hour ago.”

Two FBI special agents stepped forward, grabbing Vincenzo by the shoulders and hauling him to his feet. They slapped steel cuffs around his wrists with a heavy, final click.

As Vincenzo was dragged away screaming obscenities toward the waiting squad cars, Dominic didn't even watch him go.

He turned around and walked back to where Maddie sat in the quiet corner of the terminal.

He knelt down beside her chair, taking her small, cold hands in his large palms.

“It’s over,” Dominic said softly, his dark eyes searching her face with fierce tenderness. “The DeLucas are finished. Their assets are seized, their leadership is locked in federal custody, and Serafina boarded a private flight to Zurich three hours ago. There is no one left to hide from, Maddie.”

Maddie looked down at their joined hands, then up into his eyes. The shadows that had haunted her since that cold night in Wicker Park finally seemed to lift, replaced by the profound, quiet peace of a battle finally won.

“And us?” Maddie whispered.

Dominic reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the small silver velvet box he had carried through snowstorms, boardrooms, and gunfire. He flipped it open, revealing the vintage 1920s diamond ring sparkling under the harsh hangar lights.

“I was supposed to give you this before all the madness started,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a rough, emotional whisper. “I was supposed to ask you properly, without secrets, without war, and without lies.”

He slid the delicate diamond onto her left ring finger. It fit perfectly.

“Marry me, Madeline Hayes,” Dominic said, looking up at her with a vulnerability he had never shown another human being in his life. “Let me spend the rest of my days proving to you that I am a man you never have to run from.”

May you like

Maddie smiled, a bright, tearful, beautiful smile that chased away the last remnants of the Chicago winter.

“Yes,” she whispered, leaning down to press her lips to his. “Yes, Dominic. I’ll marry you.”
