Chapter 9 - The Queen’s Realm

Six months later.

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was bathed in shimmering gold light. Over five hundred of the most prominent figures in New York society—politicians, billionaires, foreign diplomats, and renowned surgeons—filled the room for the annual Manhattan Healthcare Excellence Awards.

On stage, Chairman Arthur Sterling stood at the podium, smiling broadly into the flashing cameras.

"Tonight," Chairman Sterling announced, his voice echoing through the grand hall, "we present the highest honor of our medical network—The Lifetime Achievement in Trauma Innovation Award. This year, the board’s decision was unanimous."

He paused, looking down at the central table.

"It goes to a woman who has demonstrated unyielding courage, supreme surgical skill, and an unwavering commitment to human life. The newly appointed Chief Trauma Specialist of Hudson Crest Medical Center—Dr. Maya Falcone!"

The entire ballroom rose to their feet in a thunderous standing ovation.

I sat at the central table wearing a breathtaking midnight-blue silk gown that matched my eyes. My dark hair was swept up in an elegant vintage style, and on my finger sparkled a flawless, radiant-cut diamond band.

Beside me, Adrian stood up. He wore a crisp black tuxedo, looking impeccably handsome, his eyes shining with an overwhelming, incandescent pride.

He reached down, took my hand, and pressed a tender, lingering kiss to my knuckles before leading me toward the stage.

As I walked up the marble steps, I passed the table where several former hospital board members sat. Among them was the Chief of Medicine, who bowed his head in deep respect as I walked past.

Vanessa Hale was nowhere to be seen. She was currently serving a six-year sentence in a state penitentiary for evidence tampering and reckless endangerment, her medical license permanently revoked, her name erased from every medical registry in the country.

I stepped up to the podium, holding the heavy crystal award in my hands. The room fell into a respectful, attentive silence.

"Twelve years ago," I spoke into the microphone, my voice clear, strong, and melodic, "I entered the emergency room as a junior nurse. I was told by many that I should know my place. I was told that nurses follow orders, while others decide who lives and who dies."

I looked across the glittering ballroom, meeting Adrian’s dark, loving gaze at the front table.

"I learned that true power isn't about a title on a door or the money in your bank account," I continued, a warm, radiant smile gracing my lips. "True power is the ability to stand in the darkest, most terrifying moments of a person's life, look death in the eye, and say: Not today."

The crowd erupted into wild applause once more.

After the ceremony, Adrian and I walked out onto the private terrace overlooking Central Park. The cool night breeze blew gently through my gown as the city lights glittered below us like a sea of fallen stars.

Adrian stepped up behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist, pulling my back flush against his chest. He rested his chin softly on my shoulder.

"Chief Trauma Specialist Mrs. Falcone," Adrian whispered into my ear, his deep voice thick with romance. "Has a nice ring to it."

I turned in his arms, wrapping my hands around his neck, looking up into the eyes of the man who ruled an empire, but belonged entirely to me.

"I could have done it without the title, you know," I teased softly.

May you like

"I know," Adrian murmured, leaning down until his lips brushed against mine. "You didn't need my name to conquer this city, Maya. You did it all on your own. I’m just the lucky man who gets to walk beside the Queen."

He kissed me deeply under the starlit sky, sealing a future where no one would ever question who I was, where love had conquered every shadow, and where the nurse who saved the Don reigned supreme forever.
