Chapter 8 - The Painted Sky

Six months later.
The West Texas sun was dipping low over Route 385, casting long, amber shadows across the newly paved parking lot of the Painted Sky Diner.
The neon sign outside no longer buzzed—it had been completely rewired, shining with a steady, brilliant blue glow that could be seen for miles across the desert flats. Inside, the counter gleamed with polished chrome, the vinyl booths had been reupholstered in rich cognac leather, and the air smelled of fresh coffee, apple pie, and possibility.
Delia Marsh stood behind the counter, wearing a crisp white apron with her name tag—DELIA—pinned straight and proud over her heart.
The bell above the front door chimed.
Delia looked up with a bright, welcoming smile as the door swung open.
Nico walked in, carrying two bulky, wriggling baby carriers, one in each arm. He was dressed in a tailored charcoal suit without a tie, looking every bit the successful, legitimate logistics executive he had become since liquidating his underworld assets into a clean, global freight company based out of San Antonio.
Behind him toddled Seb and Eva—now ten months old, wobbling unsteadily on chubby legs across the newly waxed floor, laughing hysterically as they chased a stray rubber ball.
"Table for three and a very demanding pair of executives," Nico said with a warm, easy smile, walking up to the counter and setting the carriers down.
"We're fresh out of tables for demanding executives," Delia teased, leaning across the counter to press a quick, loving kiss to his lips. "Unless they're willing to share a booth with a very tired waitress."
"We'll manage," Nico chuckled, pulling her into a brief, tight embrace before turning to scoop up both toddlers as they reached his legs, hoisting them effortlessly into the air to squeals of pure delight.

Delia looked past them, through the large front window of the diner, out toward the endless expanse of the West Texas horizon where the sky was burning in brilliant shades of violet, gold, and pink—the exact color of a painted sky that finally lived up to its name.
The desert was still vast. The wind still blew across the flats. But the silence in her life was gone, replaced by the chaotic, beautiful, noisy reality of a family that had survived the storm and found its way home.
