Chapter 6 - The Breach

The gunshot didn't come from Adrian’s gun.

Before Adrian could pull the trigger, the window behind him shattered in a shower of glass as a high-powered sniper round ripped through the frame, striking Adrian’s shoulder and spinning him violently against the wall. His pistol clattered loudly to the hardwood floor.

Alarms began to wail throughout the estate—a shrill, deafening klaxon that signaled a full-scale external breach.

“Stay down!” Davis barked, drawing a backup Glock from his shoulder holster with terrifying speed and firing two rounds through the open doorway into the hallway.

Outside, the sound of automatic gunfire echoed through the grand corridors of the east wing. Shouts, breaking glass, and the heavy thud of combat boots shook the floorboards. The rival syndicate hadn't just sent an assassin to the school; they had launched a coordinated assault on the estate while Davis was distracted.

Clara ignored the throbbing pain in her injured shoulder, scrambling off the bed. “The twins! Toby and Bella!”

“They’re in the panic room beneath the nursery,” Davis said, grabbing her by the uninjured arm and pulling her toward the hallway. “Move!”

They sprinted through the smoke-filled corridor, stepping over shattered picture frames and broken marble. Gunfire rattled downstairs, too close for comfort. As they reached the nursery wing, two armed men in tactical gear emerged from the stairwell, raising their rifles toward them.

Davis shoved Clara behind his back, firing three rapid shots that dropped the first attacker instantly. The second attacker lunged forward, tackling Davis to the floor in a brutal exchange of blows.

Clara saw the second man raise his knife toward Davis’s throat.

Adrenaline surged past the agony in her shoulder. She spotted Adrian’s discarded pistol lying a few feet away on the carpet. She dove for it, her fingers wrapping around the cold steel grip. She didn't think; she didn't hesitate. She rolled over, pointed the heavy weapon with both hands, and pulled the trigger.

The recoil jarred her injured arm, screaming pain through her entire body, but the bullet struck true. The attacker slumped sideways off Davis.

Davis kicked the body away, scrambled to his feet, and grabbed Clara by the hand, dragging her into the nursery.

“Are you insane?” Davis yelled over the roar of the alarms.

“They were going to kill you!” she shouted back.

Davis didn't waste another second. He punched the digital access code into the nursery wall panel, revealing a heavy steel reinforced door that slid open silently. Inside, sitting huddled together on a plush rug with their stuffed animals, were Toby and Bella, wide-eyed and shaking with fear.

Davis swept them up in his arms, practically throwing them into the safe room, and motioned for Clara to follow.

“Get inside. Stay down,” Davis commanded.

“Where are you going?” Clara asked, grabbing his sleeve.

“To finish this,” Davis said. His pale eyes burned with a dark, terrifying resolve. He leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers for one brief, agonizing second. “If I don't come back, stay in this room. The code locks from the inside.”

Before she could speak, he slammed the steel door shut, locking her and the children in the safety of the reinforced vault.

Inside, the lights flickered softly. Toby buried his face in Clara’s lap, sobbing quietly, while Bella held her other hand so tightly her knuckles turned white. Clara wrapped her arms around both of them, her heart hammering against her ribs as the sound of muffled explosions and gunfire echoed through the steel walls.

She prayed. She prayed for the children, she prayed for herself, and above all, she prayed for the feared mafia boss who had finally let someone into his broken heart.
