Chapter 6 - The True Home

The private jet climbed steadily through the heavy Oregon clouds, banking south toward the sprawling, sun-drenched cliffs of the California coast.

Inside the cabin, the atmosphere was a world away from the dusty, blood-stained floor of the bookstore in Astoria.

Leo and Maya were fast asleep on a plush cream-colored leather couch, wrapped in cashmere blankets emblazoned with the Vale family crest. Maya clutched her stuffed rabbit in one arm, while Leo’s small hand was loosely curled around Marcus’s index finger.

Marcus sat on the edge of the sofa, watching his children sleep with an expression of such profound, agonizing tenderness that it made Evelyn’s heart ache.

Evelyn stood by the cabin window, looking out over the endless expanse of clouds glowing gold in the setting sun.

Footsteps approached softly across the carpet. A heavy wool coat draped over her shoulders, and warm arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a solid, familiar chest.

“They’re finally asleep,” Marcus murmured, resting his chin on her shoulder.

“They’re exhausted,” Evelyn whispered, leaning back into his embrace. “It’s been a crazy day for a three-year-old.”

“It’s been a crazy three years for all of us,” Marcus replied, his arms tightening around her. He turned her around slowly so she was facing him. His gray eyes searched her face with quiet intensity. “You know... the estate in Beverly Hills has been empty. I haven't slept in that master bedroom since the night you left.”

“Marcus...” Evelyn started, but he pressed a gentle finger against her lips.

“Let me finish, Evie,” he said softly. “When we land, we aren't going back to that house. I had it torn down to the foundation six months ago. In its place, I built something new. A home with high stone walls, private gardens, and heavy iron gates—not to keep people out, but to keep my family safe.”

Evelyn looked up at him, searching his face for any trace of the old arrogance, the old terrifying detachment. She found none. There was only a man who had burned his entire empire to the ground and rebuilt it around the only three people who mattered.

“And what about your business?” Evelyn asked gently. “The syndicate, the ports, the power?”

“I’m stepping down from active leadership next month,” Marcus said without hesitation. “Vane is taking over day-to-day operations. I’m transferring seventy percent of our liquid assets into a blind philanthropic trust managed jointly by you and me. We’re legitimate, Evie. Clean. Forever.”

Evelyn smiled, a bright, beautiful smile that reached her eyes for the first time in three long years.

“You really mean it, don't you?”

“I would burn the world twice over if it meant keeping that smile on your face,” Marcus whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

He leaned down, capturing her lips in a kiss that was slow, deep, and fiercely possessive—a sealing of a vow written in blood, rain, and unwavering love. It wasn't the tentative kiss of new lovers; it was the desperate, triumphant embrace of two souls who had survived hell and found their way back to each other.

A tiny yawn echoed from the sofa.

Marcus and Evelyn broke apart gently to look down.

Leo rubbed his sleepy gray eyes, looking up at his father with a scowl that instantly melted into a tired grin. “Daddy?” the boy asked, his voice small and sleepy.

Marcus dropped down to one knee beside the couch, looking at his son with a smile that could have melted stone.

“Yeah, buddy?” Marcus answered softly.

“Are we going home now?”

May you like

Marcus reached out, pulling both Leo and Maya into his arms alongside Evelyn, gathering his entire world into a single, unbreakable circle.

“Yeah, son,” Marcus whispered, pressing a kiss to Evelyn’s hair as the jet soared higher into the golden sky. “We’re going home.”
