Chapter 5 - The Night Vigil

The federal vehicles did not storm the front doors; they surrounded the estate like a pack of wolves closing in on a wounded stag.
Inside the grand foyer, the air was thick with tension. The four boys were huddled together near the base of the grand staircase, their red pajamas suddenly looking far too thin for the cold reality of the world their father inhabited.
Daniel stood by the reinforced glass window, watching the flashing red and blue lights paint the manicured lawns in harsh, erratic strokes. His face was a mask of cold, unyielding granite, but the veins in his forearms stood out like steel cables.
"They have a search warrant for the premises, signed twenty minutes ago," Bram reported, reading from a secure encrypted tablet. "They claim an anonymous tip was filed stating that contraband and an endangered minor are being unlawfully harbored on the property."
"An endangered minor," Daniel repeated, his voice dropping into a low, lethal hum. "Richard Sterling’s handy work. He’s using federal muscle to harass us, hoping I'll react violently so he can lock me away and strip the boys of their guardianship."
Elena stepped out from the hallway, her expression set in hard, unyielding lines. She had spent the last ten minutes locking the kitchen doors, securing her bag, and pulling her hair back into a tight braid.
"They aren't here for your contraband, Mr. Foretti," Elena said calmly. "They're here to create a spectacle. If the federal marshals raid a known mafia boss's estate and find a struggling mother and her child—or find me working illegally without a background clearance—it makes the evening news. It gives my ex-husband the ammunition he needs to destroy me in family court."
Daniel turned slowly, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "You think I'm going to let them step foot in this house?"
"I think if you start a firefight with federal marshals on your front lawn, you give the DOJ the exact excuse they've been waiting for since 2020," Elena countered, stepping closer. "You want to protect these boys? You want to protect me? Then don't draw a weapon. Let me handle the front door."
Bram scoffed, stepping between them. "Lady, you don't know who's standing out there. Those aren't local cops; those are private contractors funded by corporate bank accounts. They don't negotiate."
"Neither do I," Elena said, her voice cutting through the room like broken glass.
Before Daniel could stop her, she walked past Bram, unlocked the heavy oak front door, and pulled it open, stepping out onto the stone porch into the freezing drizzle.
The wind whipped her hair across her face, but she didn't flinch.
Floodlights from three armored SUVs blinded her, illuminating the rain-slicked driveway where a half-dozen tactical officers in black ballistic gear stood with their weapons at the ready. At the center of the contingent stood a man in an expensive tailored suit holding a leather folio—Marcus Vance, a federal prosecutor known in the Southern District as a corporate hitman.
"Elena Mancuso?" Vance called out, his voice amplified by a megaphone. "Step away from the threshold. We have an emergency welfare inspection order for any minors residing at this address."
Elena raised her chin, her voice carrying clearly over the hum of idling engines. "There are no minors being harbored here, Mr. Vance. There are four children sleeping in their beds under the legal guardianship of their father. And if you cross this property line without a properly executed, non-emergency warrant signed by a federal judge who isn't currently under a judicial ethics investigation for taking bribes from Richard Sterling... my lawyers will file a civil rights violation so fast your career will evaporate before midnight."

The prosecutor froze, lowering his megaphone by a fraction of an inch.
From the doorway behind her, Daniel Foretti watched her with a look that defied description. It wasn't just respect. It was the absolute, terrifying devotion of a man who had just realized his new nanny possessed more backbone than his entire cabinet of capos.
