Chapter 5 - The First Bleed

Three weeks later, the transformation inside Mercer Corp’s Midtown headquarters was imperceptible to the outside world, but catastrophic underneath the hood.
Ryan Mercer sat behind his massive glass desk on the forty-second floor, rubbing his temples as his chief technology officer, Marcus Vance, rushed into the office holding a tablet with trembling fingers.
“Mr. Mercer, we have a systemic anomaly in the secondary liquidity pools,” Marcus stammered, his face pale under the fluorescent office lights.
Ryan didn't look up from his financial projections. “Explain in English, Marcus. What kind of anomaly?”
“It’s... it’s bleeding capital, sir. Over the last forty-eight hours, three of our automated high-frequency trading nodes in Chicago and London have executed short-sell positions against our own upcoming tech acquisitions. We’ve lost fourteen million dollars in six hours.”
Ryan’s head snapped up. His cold, calculating blue eyes fixed on the CTO with terrifying intensity. “Against our own acquisitions? That’s mathematically impossible unless someone inside the core network is executing unauthorized overrides.”
“That’s the problem, sir,” Marcus whispered, sweating profusely. “The override code isn't coming from an external hacker. It’s using an internal cryptographic signature... an old developer key from two years ago.”
Ryan stood up so fast his leather executive chair rolled back and crashed against the glass wall.
Two years ago.
Only one person had possessed that specific developmental key structure before she was fired, silenced, and driven out of the industry.
Lily Bennett.
“Find her,” Ryan snarled, his voice dropping into a low, murderous hiss. “Find out where she’s living, who she’s working for, and how she managed to touch our servers. If she’s playing with my empire, I’ll make sure she never sees daylight again.”
Unknown to Ryan, forty blocks downtown, Lily sat in the high-security cyber bunker of Holloway Investments, watching the glowing data streams on a multi-monitor setup. Beside her, Grant Holloway watched as millions of dollars of Ryan Mercer’s fraudulent capital evaporated into the ether.

“That was just the warm-up, Lily,” Grant murmured, his shoulder brushing hers as he leaned over the console.
Lily looked at the scrolling code, her heart pounding with a thrilling, terrifying sense of liberation. “He thinks he owns the world,” she whispered. “Let’s see how he looks when the world realizes he’s bankrupt.”
