Chapter 5 - The Siege of the Mansion

Upstairs on the main floor of the Moretti mansion, the engagement party had transformed into a gilded cage.

The three hundred guests—consisting of high-ranking syndicate capos, corrupt politicians, judges, and Manhattan elites—were trapped. Armed Moretti enforcers stood at every exit, blocking the massive mahogany doors and patrolling the perimeter gardens. Outside, the cold Atlantic wind lashed against the tall windows, while the distant lights of police cruisers flickered near the outer gates—though local law enforcement knew better than to cross the Moretti property line without a formal invitation.

Old Don Falcone sat in a velvet armchair near the grand piano, nursing a glass of scotch, watching the panicked socialites with cold amusement.

“Quiet down, people!” Falcone barked, slamming his silver-headed cane against the marble floor. “Mr. Moretti will address you when he is finished with his domestic affairs. Until then, enjoy the champagne and keep your mouths shut.”

In the center of the room, senator Robert Vance—Vanessa’s uncle, a powerful federal legislator—was red-faced and sweating through his custom-tailored tuxedo as he confronted Vince Moretti, who had just returned to the main floor.

“This is an outrage!” Senator Vance shouted, waving his finger in Vince’s face. “You are detaining sitting government officials! I demand to speak to Dante immediately, or I will have the National Guard swarming this estate before midnight!”

Vince didn't blink. He simply stared down at the senator with dead eyes.

“Senator,” Vince said smoothly, “you can talk to the National Guard all you want. But right now, your niece is downstairs confessing to murder and twenty years of federal espionage against every syndicate family on the East Coast. If I were you, I’d stop worrying about your schedule and start worrying about whether your own name appears in her ledger.”

The senator’s jaw went slack. He stumbled backward, colliding with a display of white roses, sending petals scattering across the floor.

At that exact moment, the double doors at the entrance of the grand hall opened.

Dante Moretti walked down the marble steps.

He had cleaned up—his black Italian suit was immaculate once more, his silver cufflinks flashing in the chandelier light. But the expression on his face was terrifying. It was the face of a man who had stared into the abyss of his own past and emerged without a shred of mercy.

Behind him walked little Lily, clutching her stuffed rabbit, holding tightly to the hem of Dante’s trousers.

The entire grand hall went dead silent. Three hundred pairs of eyes fixed on Dante as he walked to the center of the room, stopping beneath the glowing crystal chandelier.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Dante’s voice echoed across the hall, steady and commanding. “Thank you for attending what was supposed to be my engagement party. As you have undoubtedly heard by now, the engagement has been... canceled.”

A murmur rippled through the crowd.

“Tonight, we uncovered a cancer that has been rotting our families from the inside for twenty years,” Dante continued, his dark eyes sweeping over the terrified faces of politicians and capos alike. “Vanessa Hale was not just a fiancée. She was a federal operative who murdered my brother, Leo Moretti, framed our name, and fed our operations to the government while smiling in our faces.”

He looked directly at Senator Vance, who looked ready to faint.

“And she wasn't working alone,” Dante added quietly. “Her handlers in the federal task force were funded by corrupt politicians sitting in this very room. Politicians who used our money to buy elections while selling us out to the highest bidder.”

Dante knelt down, gently picking up little Lily and lifting her into his arms.

“The Moretti family was built on blood and secrecy,” Dante said, his voice ringing with absolute finality. “That era ends tonight. From this moment on, anyone who betrays family, anyone who trades in lies and murder, answers to me. The doors are open. You may leave. But if your name is in Vanessa’s ledger, don't bother packing a bag—we will find you before sunrise.”
