Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

By midnight, the storm had grown into a howling gale, shaking the tall windows of the Romano estate and rattling the wrought-iron gates at the perimeter.
Inside his second-floor study, Allessandro sat in total darkness, illuminated only by the pale blue glow of his computer monitors. On the screen, a live security feed showed the interior of the west safehouse basement. Isabella was sitting on the edge of a narrow cot, staring blankly at the concrete wall, her defiance finally shattered by hours of absolute isolation.
The encrypted burner phone on his desk buzzed.
Allessandro picked it up immediately. "Talk."
"Boss," Marcus’s gravelly voice crackled through the speaker, competing with the roar of the wind. "We got movement on the south perimeter. Three unmarked sedans just bypassed the outer cameras. They're heading up the service road toward the main house."
Allessandro didn't flinch. "Vance didn't waste any time."
"They're heavily armed, Boss. Looks like a clean-up crew from out of town. Probably New York muscle brought in by the Senator to silence the loose ends and get Isabella back before morning."
"Let them in," Allessandro said calmly.
"Boss?" Marcus sounded genuinely surprised. "You want us to open the gates for a hit squad?"
"I want them to step right into the foyer," Allessandro replied, his voice dropping into a dark, lethal cadence. "If Senator Vance wants to play war in my house, I’m going to give him a battle he’ll never forget. Position Dante by the west corridor. Take the rear staircase yourself. Let them think they caught us sleeping."
"Understood," Marcus grunted, the phone clicking dead.
Allessandro stood up from his desk. He walked over to a concealed wood-paneled wall cabinet, pulled it open, and revealed a customized Italian tactical shotgun resting beside two loaded magazines. He checked the action with a familiar, mechanical click, slid an extra box of shells into his pocket, and stepped out into the dark hallway.
The Romano estate was quiet—dead quiet. The servants were gone. The kitchen was dark. The dining table where Emma had whispered her warning was empty, the shattered ceramic plate long since swept away, though the memory of the golden bread lingered like a phantom.
Downstairs, the heavy oak front door groaned.
A crowbar wedged into the frame snapped the deadbolt with a sharp, echoing crack of splintered wood.
The door swung wide open, letting in a gust of cold, wet autumn wind.
Five figures stepped into the grand foyer, clad in black tactical gear, faces masked in dark balaclavas, automatic carbines raised and sweeping the shadows. They moved with professional, military precision—men trained to kill without hesitation.
The leader of the squad signaled with two fingers, advancing toward the grand staircase.
"Clear," the leader muttered into his shoulder radio.
He took three steps toward the stairs before the massive crystal chandelier overhead suddenly flared to life, flooding the foyer with blinding, brilliant light.
The tactical team froze, instantly pivoting their weapons toward the landing.
Standing at the top of the grand staircase, bathed in the brilliant overhead light, was Allessandro Romano. He wore no jacket, just his dark gray trousers and white shirt with sleeves rolled up. In his right hand, held casually across his thigh, was the tactical shotgun.
"Welcome to my home, gentlemen," Allessandro’s voice boomed down the stairwell, cold and absolute as a death sentence. "Did you knock before you entered?"
The squad leader raised his carbine, shouting, "Take him down—!"
Before the barrel could level, the shadows beneath the staircase erupted. Marcus lunged like a bear from the alcove, smashing his massive fist into the lead gunman’s ribs with a sickening crunch of bone, while Dante materialized from the rear corridor, sweeping another operative’s legs out from under him with a brutal kick.
Chaos exploded in the grand foyer.

Automatic gunfire cracked through the air, chewing up expensive wood paneling and shattering decorative urns, but Allessandro didn't flinch. He raised his shotgun and fired once into the ceiling, the deafening roar silencing every other sound in the room.
"Drop your weapons!" Allessandro roared, descending the stairs like an avenging angel.
