Chapter 6 - The Ghost from the Past

The digital clock on my study wall read 1:15 a.m.
I hadn't slept. Piles of financial ledgers, legal briefs, and security logs were scattered across my desk. I poured myself a double scotch, letting the burning liquor scorch my throat as I stared out the dark window at the rain-slicked courtyard.
A soft knock sounded at the door.
Before I could answer, it slowly pushed open. Elise stood in the threshold, wearing a dark hoodie and sweatpants, her hair tied in a loose bun. She looked tired, the shadows beneath her eyes mirroring my own exhaustion.
“You’re still awake,” she observed quietly, stepping inside and closing the door behind her.
“Hard to sleep when your mother-in-law is trying to legally kidnap your children,” I replied dryly, gesturing to the chair opposite my desk. “Sit down, Elise. You shouldn't be dragged into this legal crossfire. If Victoria manages to drag this firm through the dirt, your reputation could take a hit just by association.”
Elise pulled the chair out and sat down, resting her elbows on her knees as she looked up at me. “Do you really think I care about a resume bullet point right now, Dante? Those little girls are my entire world during the day. I’m not going anywhere.”
Hearing her say my first name without the formal title sent a strange, electric shiver down my spine.
“Victoria is ruthless,” I warned her, leaning back in my leather chair. “She used to control Elena’s entire life before we met. When Elena chose me—chose to build an independent life away from the Vance dynasty—Victoria never forgave either of us. Taking the girls is her way of rewriting history, of proving that she always wins.”
Elise was silent for a long moment, staring down at her hands. When she looked back up, her eyes held a strange, haunted sorrow.
“I know what it’s like to run from people who want to control your life,” she whispered.
I frowned, leaning forward. “What do you mean?”
Elise hesitated, biting her lower lip as if debating whether to unlock a door she had kept sealed for years. “There’s a reason I moved across the country three months ago, Dante. My former fiancé... he was high up in municipal finance in Chicago. Powerful family, connections everywhere. When I tried to walk away from our engagement because of his controlling, abusive behavior, he made it his mission to destroy me. He used private investigators, blocked my job applications, threatened my family.”
My blood ran cold. The protective instinct that defined my entire existence flared instantly, hot and blinding. “Did he hurt you?”
“No,” she said, shaking her head. “I got out before it came to that. But I learned very quickly how terrifying it is when powerful people decide your life belongs to them. That’s why when I saw you—a man drowning in his own fortress, surrounded by people who only want to take pieces of you—I couldn't just walk away. You’re fighting for your daughters, Dante. Just like I fought for my survival.”
I stood up from my desk, unable to maintain the professional distance anymore. I walked around the mahogany wood and stopped right in front of her chair.
“You didn't have to carry that burden alone,” I said quietly, reaching down to gently brush a stray lock of hair behind her ear. My fingers lingered against her cheek, feeling the soft warmth of her skin.
Elise caught her breath, her brown eyes widening as she looked up into mine. The air between us suddenly felt charged, thick with an unspoken attraction that had been quietly building beneath the surface of our shared grief and isolation.
“Dante...” she breathed, her voice a fragile whisper.
Before either of us could cross the final invisible line, a piercing alarm shrieked through the mansion’s intercom system.
Warning: Perimeter security breach at the east gate. Unauthorized vehicle detected.
My hand dropped from her face instantly. The cold, calculating billionaire replaced the vulnerable man in a fraction of a second.

I grabbed my Beretta from the desk drawer, checking the clip with practiced precision.
“Stay here,” I ordered, my voice hard as iron. “Lock this door behind me and don't open it for anyone.”
