Chapter 4 - The Leak, the Media, and the Digital Firestorm

By dawn, the quiet dignity of Cedar Grove Children’s Hospital had been entirely obliterated by the flashing red-and-blue lights of satellite news vans and the aggressive shoving of local reporters and camera crews.

I stood by the window of Lily’s private PICU room, watching the media circus swarm the front entrance below. The morning news broadcast was already looping the headline across the bottom of the screen in glaring red letters: PROMINENT LEGAL DYNASTY SCANDAL: RETIRED ATTORNEY ARRESTED FOR BRUTAL ASSAULT ON THREE-YEAR-OLD GRANDDAUGHTER.

"They're broadcasting our home address, Claire," James said quietly, walking into the room with a cardboard tray holding two cups of lukewarm hospital cafeteria coffee. He looked utterly hollowed out, his shirt wrinkled from sleeping upright in a plastic armchair. "And my office just called. They've placed me on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Apparently, having your father-in-law arrested for attempted murder on your toddler is considered a PR liability for an architectural firm."

I took the coffee cup from his hand, my fingers brushing his cold skin. "I'm sorry, James. This is entirely my fault. If I hadn't insisted on leaving Lily with my parents while I finished closing that federal brief—"

"Stop it right there," James interrupted, his voice firm as he grabbed my hands, forcing me to look at him. "This is not your fault, Claire. You didn't swing that belt. Arthur did. Do not ever blame yourself for a monster's actions."

Before I could answer, the door to the hospital room opened quietly.

Officer Denise Reyes stepped inside, closing the door behind her with a solemn click. She looked exhausted, her uniform jacket unbuttoned at the collar.

"Morning, Claire, James," Denise said, pulling a tablet from under her arm. "I wish I had better news, but the digital landscape has officially gone off the rails."

"What happened?" I asked, my heart dropping.

"Somebody leaked the primary body-cam footage and the nanny’s cell phone video to a national true-crime blog overnight," Denise explained, tapping the screen to bring up a viral Twitter thread with tens of thousands of retweets. "Within two hours, it was picked up by every major cable news network. Your father's defense attorney just held an impromptu press conference on the courthouse steps, claiming the video was 'contextually manipulated' and hinting that family stress and mental fatigue led to an isolated domestic incident."

"Isolated domestic incident?" I hissed, the prosecutor in me surging to the surface with blinding rage. "He fractured her skull! That wasn't a slap on the wrist; that was a brutal, targeted beating!"

"I know, Claire," Denise said sympathetically. "And the DA knows. But public opinion is starting to fracture. Social media trolls are crawling out of the woodwork, questioning your parenting, digging into your old prosecution records, trying to spin a narrative that your family was dysfunctional long before yesterday."

"Let them dig," I said, my voice dropping into a cold, lethal calm. "Because while they're busy tearing my family apart on the internet, I'm going back to the estate to search my father's study. Whatever Lily found in that room—whatever secret he was trying to hide when he struck her—is still sitting inside that house. And I'm going to find it before the police forensics team seals the property permanently."
