Chapter 9 - The Panic Room

While the harbor cleared, a lingering shadow threatened the peace of the Beacon Hill estate.

At 8:15 AM, two rogue mercenaries who had survived the initial sweep at the pier—men who had been paid in advance by Driscoll to execute a secondary contingency plan—approached the rear garden wall of the Vance mansion.

Equipped with military-grade cutting tools, they severed the perimeter security sensors and scaled the brick wall, dropping silently into the manicured rose garden.

Inside the house, Josie was sitting in the kitchen with Mrs. Gable, watching Mila color a new drawing of a sunny beach.

Suddenly, the red emergency lights on the kitchen wall began to flash silently.

Mrs. Gable’s face went pale. She instantly reached under the counter and hit a heavy iron button. "Miss Josie! The perimeter has been breached! Take Mila to the panic room now!"

Josie didn't hesitate. She grabbed Mila into her arms, ignoring the child’s sharp gasp of surprise, and sprinted down the hallway toward Dominic’s private study.

Behind them, the glass doors of the rear conservatory shattered into a thousand pieces.

"In here!" Mrs. Gable yelled, sliding open a hidden bookcase inside the study to reveal a heavy, reinforced steel door with a digital keypad.

Josie shoved Mila inside the small, brightly lit steel room. "Stay behind the desk, Mila! Don't move!"

Before Josie could step inside herself, a heavily armed mercenary burst through the study doors, raising a tactical shotgun.

Mrs. Gable tried to block him with a heavy bronze lamp, but the killer struck her across the shoulder with the butt of his weapon, sending the older woman crashing to the floor.

The killer turned his gun toward the open steel door of the panic room. "End of the line, kid—"

Josie didn't think. She didn't hesitate.

She grabbed a heavy iron fireplace poker from the hearth and swung it with every ounce of strength in her body. The heavy iron bar struck the hitman across the side of his helmet, knocking him sideways.

The man snarled, turning his weapon toward Josie. He grabbed her by the shoulder, slamming her against the edge of the mahogany desk. Pain exploded behind Josie’s eyes, but she held onto the iron poker like a vise, driving the sharp tip directly into the hitman’s tactical boot.

The man screamed in agony, dropping his weapon.

Josie kicked the shotgun across the floor, scrambled backward, and slammed the heavy steel door of the panic room shut, sliding the emergency manual bolt into place just as the second hitman reached the study.

CLANG!

The iron bolt locked tight.

Inside the panic room, Josie collapsed against the reinforced door, gasping for air, blood trickling from a small cut on her temple.

Mila ran to her immediately. The little girl wrapped her small arms around Josie’s neck, pressing her face into Josie’s shoulder.

"Joey brave," Mila sobbed softly. "Joey safe."

Josie pulled the child close, holding her tight in the quiet, impenetrable darkness of the vault. "We’re safe, sweetheart. We're safe."

Three minutes later, the heavy steel door hummed, and the manual lock disengaged from the outside.

The door swung open.

Dominic stood in the doorway, his chest heaving, his face pale with pure terror. Behind him lay the two neutralized mercenaries, surrounded by Frank’s men.

When Dominic saw Josie sitting on the floor, bruised but alive, holding Mila securely in her lap, he let out a choked gasp.

He dropped to his knees, wrapping his massive arms around both of them, pulling Josie and Mila against his chest with a force that shook his entire frame.

"I’m sorry," Dominic choked out, his voice buried in Josie’s hair. "I’m so sorry..."

Josie rested her head against his shoulder, feeling the wild, furious beat of his heart. "We're okay, Dominic. We're okay."
