Chapter 4 - The Forensic Audit

By 5:00 AM, Ethan was back at Cole Development headquarters on Wall Street, sitting at the massive mahogany desk in his executive suite. The city outside was just beginning to stir, its grey towers emerging from the predawn mist like jagged teeth.

Standing before his desk were two men: Victor Vance, head of corporate security and a former federal investigator, and Marcus Thorne, senior partner at the firm’s forensic accounting division.

Marcus laid a thick binder on Ethan’s desk, filled with printed bank statements, wire transfer receipts, and corporate registry printouts.

“Mr. Cole,” Marcus began, adjusting his glasses. “We’ve spent the last two hours tearing through the internal ledgers and the offshore accounts linked to Meridian Holdings. What Ms. Reed did wasn't just a simple property grab. It was an institutional-grade embezzlement scheme.”

Ethan stared down at the documents, his face pale, dark circles bruising the skin beneath his eyes. He hadn't slept a wink. Every second that ticked by without word from Nora felt like a physical wound.

“Spell it out for me, Marcus,” Ethan commanded, his voice dead flat.

“Over the past fourteen months,” Marcus explained, flipping a page to reveal a complex chart of financial flows, “Ms. Reed systematically diverted funds from Cole Development’s regional acquisition budget into three intermediary shell companies—Meridian, Apex Capital, and Vanguard Trust. The total amount embezzled exceeds twelve point five million dollars. Furthermore, she used Nora Mrs. Cole’s ancestral land along the Hudson as collateral to secure a multi-million-dollar construction loan from an overseas lender without board authorization.”

Victor Vance stepped forward, his arms folded across his broad chest. “And that’s not all, Boss. I ran a trace on Ms. Reed’s personal communications and financial logs from last night. Right after you left her apartment, she didn't call a lawyer. She called a private security firm known for handling ‘discreet acquisitions’—men with criminal records who specialize in intimidation and forced property signings.”

Ethan’s head snapped up. “Intimidation? You think she sent someone after Nora?”

“We know Nora packed her maternity bag and left in her car—a 2024 silver Subaru Outback,” Victor said grimly, tapping a tablet on the desk. “License plate numbers are logged in the state toll system. She passed through the George Washington Bridge northbound at 2:14 AM, heading toward Albany. But thirty minutes behind her, a black Ford Explorer registered to one of Vanessa’s shell companies also cleared the toll plaza.”

Ethan stood up so fast his leather chair crashed backward onto the carpet.

“She’s heading to her grandmother’s estate,” Ethan realized aloud, the pieces clicking together with terrifying clarity. “The old cottage by the river. That’s the only place she’d go where she felt safe... and Vanessa knows it.”

“We’ve got a chopper warmed up on the roof,” Victor said instantly, reading the intent in Ethan’s eyes. “Pilot is prepped. We can be over the Hudson property in forty-five minutes.”

“Let’s move,” Ethan said, grabbing his coat. “If a single hair on my wife or my child is harmed, Vanessa Reed and every single thug she hired will spend the rest of their natural lives in a maximum-security prison—if they’re lucky.”
