Chapter 4 - The Corporate Vultures

The revelation hit Andrew like a physical blow. He staggered backward, his hip hitting the edge of the marble island, the crystal glass slipping from his fingers and shattering against the hardwood floor. Amber liquid and glittering shards scattered across the room, but neither of them moved.
“Alex... was in the car?” Andrew’s voice was a ragged whisper, stripped of all its corporate authority, leaving only the raw, bleeding core of a shattered father.
“He was buckled in his booster seat,” Elizabeth said, her voice softening with profound grief as tears welled in her eyes. “The car didn't plunge into the water immediately; it hung precariously over the concrete barrier of the overpass for nearly two minutes. Emma managed to unbuckle Alex and push him out through the half-broken rear window onto the grassy embankment just before the vehicle gave way.”
Andrew closed his eyes, his hands gripping the edge of the counter so tightly his knuckles turned white. A violent shudder wracked his frame. He had blamed himself for months—believing his constant absence, his obsession with work, had broken his family. He had never known that Emma had fought to the very last second to save their son from the exact same fate.
“Why didn't he tell anyone?” Andrew choked out. “When the police found him wandering near the embankment... why didn't he speak?”
“Because the men who pushed the car over the barrier were still standing in the shadows, Andrew,” Elizabeth said fiercely, stepping right up to him. “They whispered to him. They told him that if he ever told a soul what he saw—if he ever uttered a single word about the strange men in the black coats—his daddy would be next.”
The horror of it paralyzed Andrew. His five-year-old boy had carried the crushing weight of that terrifying secret, locked away in a fortress of absolute silence, terrified that speaking would cost him the only parent he had left.
And all that time, Richard Sterling—the man Andrew trusted like a brother, the man who sat beside him at board meetings and offered condolences with a hypocritical smile—had been pulling the strings.
“Sterling,” Andrew muttered, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl that sounded less like a man and more like a caged beast. The billionaire tycoon vanished, replaced entirely by a vengeful father ready to tear down empires to protect his child.
“If you go after him now without proof, you’ll lose,” Elizabeth warned, gripping his arm. “Sterling is currently orchestrating a hostile takeover of your voting shares. He’s already filed a petition with family court claiming you’re an unstable, absentee billionaire incapable of providing a safe environment for a traumatized child. His lawyers are scheduled to arrive here tomorrow morning with a court-appointed evaluator to seize emergency custody of Alex.”
Andrew looked down at her hand on his arm, then up into her resolute eyes. The suspicion that had lingered in his mind was entirely gone. There was only an alliance forged in fire and shared grief.
“They want to take my son?” Andrew’s lips curved into a cold, ruthless smile. “Let them try. We have until morning. It’s time we showed them what happens when you back a James into a corner.”
For the rest of the night, the penthouse lights burned bright.

While Alex slept peacefully upstairs—free of nightmares for the first time in months—Andrew and Elizabeth poured over the encrypted files Sarah and Emma had left behind. They uncovered a web of financial corruption, forged safety reports, and offshore wire transfers linking Sterling directly to the tampering of Emma’s vehicle.
By 4:00 AM, the trap was set. They hadn't just prepared a defense; they had engineered a counter-offensive that would obliterate Sterling’s career, his freedom, and his entire corporate syndicate in a single, devastating stroke.
