Chapter 7 - The Secret Unfolds

Before I could demand an explanation, a shrill, piercing sound echoed through the mansion.

Wooo-wooo-wooo.

The estate’s primary security alarm wailed across the walls, red emergency lights flashing strobe-like patterns along the corridors.

Dante’s demeanor shifted from grief-stricken widower to tactical commander in a fraction of a second. He grabbed my arm, his grip iron-tight, and pulled me toward the stairs.

“Perimeter breach!” he shouted over the blaring alarm. “East gate compromised! Get to the nursery wing, lock the doors, and do not open them for anyone—do you hear me? Anyone except me!”

“Leo and Mia!” I gasped, panic overriding my fear.

“I’ve got them!” Dante barked, pushing me toward the stairs. “Run!”

I didn't run to my room. I sprinted down the hall toward the children’s suite.

The heavy oak doors of the nursery were already open. Leo stood in the middle of the room, clutching his trembling little sister in his arms, both of them white-faced and terrified as red lights flashed across their bedroom walls.

“Clara!” Mia cried out, running across the room and burying her face in my waist.

“I’ve got you,” I said, scooping Mia up with one arm while grabbing Leo’s hand with the other. “We need to get into the safe room. Come on.”

I ushered them into the adjoining walk-in closet, which concealed a reinforced steel panic room panel Margaret had shown me during my first week orientation. I punched in the six-digit code, the heavy steel door hissed open, and I ushered the children inside.

Inside, emergency battery lamps glowed softly, revealing a small cot, a mini-fridge, and a live security monitor displaying feeds from across the estate.

On the main monitor, the exterior cameras showed chaos.

Three black SUVs had rammed through the outer security gates. Armed men in tactical gear, their faces obscured by black balaclavas, were spilling across the front lawn, exchanging gunfire with Dante’s private security detail. The sharp pop-pop-pop of automatic weapons echoed clearly through the night air.

“Are the bad men coming to get us?” Leo whispered, his voice shaking as he squeezed his sister’s hand.

“No,” I said, kneeling down and looking straight into his transparent blue eyes, forcing every ounce of calm I possessed into my voice. “Your dad is out there. And your dad doesn't lose.”

On the monitor, I watched Dante emerge from the main entrance. He wasn't wearing a jacket now. He held a sleek, suppressed tactical rifle in his hands, moving with terrifying, calculated precision. He flanked two of his guards, returning fire with lethal accuracy, driving the intruders back toward the treeline.

But as I watched the screen, I noticed something else—something happening on the feed from the western gate.

A separate group of men—men not wearing tactical gear, but sharp corporate suits—were cutting through the perimeter fence near the old greenhouse. And they weren't carrying assault rifles. They were carrying heavy metal breach cases, heading directly toward the third-floor trunk room.

They weren't here to assassinate Dante.

They were here to steal Elena’s cedar box.
