Chapter 5 - Vigil and Shadows

The Intensive Care Unit was quiet at 3:00 AM, save for the hum of the ventilator assisting Mia’s breathing and the gentle drop of her blood transfusion.

Carter hadn't washed the blood from his arms. He sat in a rigid plastic chair beside her bed, his dark suit ruined, his eyes bloodshot and dark with bruised exhaustion. On his lap lay his phone, which had been buzzing continuously for six hours.

Vivian. The Board. Harrison Wells.

And Preston Fields.

The door to the private ICU room swung open without a knock.

Preston Fields walked in. At sixty-two, the senior partner of Fields & Associates was a man who built his reputation on intimidating federal judges. He wore an immaculate charcoal overcoat, his silver hair combed back, his eyes sharp and merciless as he looked down at his unconscious daughter, then at Carter.

"You monstrous bastard," Preston said, his voice a low, dangerous growl.

Carter didn't move. He didn't even look up from Mia’s face. "Hello, Preston."

"She left you eight months ago," Preston stepped closer, his cane clicking sharply against the linoleum floor. "She hid in a fifty-foot walk-up in Capitol Hill, eating canned soup, while you lived in a thirty-million-dollar mansion in Bellevue! And now she's lying in an ICU hooked to a machine because of your blood!"

"She was carrying my children," Carter said quietly.

"They are her children!" Preston snapped, slapping a thick leather folder onto the bedside table. "I’ve already drafted emergency guardianship papers for the twins and a petition to grant me medical power of attorney over Lauren. You signed the divorce papers this morning, Carter. You are legally a stranger to her."

Finally, Carter looked up.

The tired, grieving husband vanished. In his place sat the ruthless titan of Langston Engineering—the man who had crushed corporate raiders and rebuilt cities.

"I didn't sign them," Carter said flatly.

Preston paused, his brow furrowing. "Harrison said—"

"Harrison was wrong," Carter cut him off, standing up slowly. He towered over the older attorney, his shadow falling long across the room. "The papers are sitting on my desk, covered in ink and torn in half. Lauren Fields is my wife. Those babies in the NICU are my son and daughter. If you take one step toward a judge to challenge my authority, I will buy your law firm by nine tomorrow morning and liquidate every asset you own."

Preston’s face flushed a dangerous, mottled red. "You wouldn't dare. The scandal—"

"I don't give a damn about the scandal!" Carter roared in a harsh, deadly whisper, stepping directly into Preston's space. "Where were you, Preston? When she was crying in that apartment? When she couldn't pay her medical bills because she was too proud to ask me or you for money? Where were you?"

Preston went quiet, his lips pressing into a thin, white line.

"You used her as a bargaining chip to get my company's legal retainer four years ago," Carter rasped, his eyes burning with pure venom. "And I let you do it because I was too stupid to see what she was worth. But that game is over. Get out of my wife's room before I have security throw you into the rain."

Preston stared at Carter for three long seconds, realizing with terrifying clarity that the billionaire had crossed a line from which there was no return. Without another word, Preston snatched his folder off the table and turned on his heel, exiting into the quiet corridor.

Carter exhaled a long, shuddering breath. He sat back down in the chair, his strength leaving him all at once.

He reached out, taking Mia’s pale, soft hand back into his own.

A tiny finger twitched against his palm.

Carter froze.

Mia’s eyelashes fluttered. She opened her eyes slowly, squinting against the dim yellow light of the monitor. Her sea-glass eyes were unfocused, heavy, but as they drifted over his face, a tiny, faint crease appeared between her brows.

"Carter?" she whispered.

"I'm here, Mia," he choked out, leaning down to kiss her knuckles. "I'm right here."

She looked around the sterile room, her gaze falling on her now-flat abdomen. Panic flared instantly in her eyes. "The... the babies..."

"They're alive," Carter said quickly, his voice overflowing with gentle warmth. "They're in the NICU three floors down. A boy and a girl. They're small, Mia... but they're breathing. They're fighting."

May you like

Tears overflowed her eyes, running down her pale temples into her hair. "A boy... and a girl?"

"A boy and a girl," Carter confirmed, smiling through his own tears. "And they look just like you."
