Chapter 5 - The Reconstruction

The next six months were a quiet revolution. We didn’t tear down the white columns or modernize the architecture; instead, we rebuilt the heart of the estate. I took over the administration, not with a clipboard and a list of demands, but with a philosophy of radical fairness. I hired staff who had been overlooked, ensured they had fair wages, their own private time, and the dignity that had been stripped away during Clara’s reign.
Ethan was a revelation. He became a fixture in the garden, no longer the distracted tech mogul glued to his phone, but a man who actually looked at the world around him. He learned how to prune the roses, how to listen to the staff’s concerns, and, most importantly, how to be a father figure to Lily. He would spend hours reading to her in the staff library, a space we had renovated into a bright, welcoming room filled with books and laughter.
The bond between us shifted into something steady and profound. It wasn't the sudden, volatile spark of a romance movie, but a slow, tectonic movement of two souls finding their footing on the same ground. We spent our evenings on the back veranda, sipping tea and discussing the future of the estate—not as a business, but as a home. He asked me about my life in San Antonio, about my hopes for Lily’s education, and about the small, beautiful things he had been too busy to notice for the last decade.
However, the shadow of the past remained. Clara hadn't just disappeared; she had been waging a war from the outside. She used her family’s connections to spread vicious rumors through the business circles, attempting to frame Ethan’s breakup as a result of his "erratic mental state." She leaked fabricated documents to the press, trying to paint me as an opportunist who had manipulated a vulnerable man. We were fighting a war of words, a constant battle to keep our peace from being eroded by her spite.
"She’s desperate," Ethan noted one night, his jaw tight as he read a particularly nasty headline. "She built her entire identity on being the future Mrs. Harrow. Without that, she’s just… nothing."

"Let her be nothing," I said, placing a hand on his arm. "We have everything. Let her exhaust herself in the dark."
His gaze softened as he looked at me. "I spent so much time being the 'king' of this estate, Rosa. I was so worried about my image, my legacy, and my market share. I never stopped to realize that I was building an empire on a foundation of sand. You’re the one who built the ground beneath my feet."
