Chapter 5 - Lucas Enters the Equation

“What the hell was that?” Vincent barked, his hand instantly dipping inside his jacket toward a concealed Sig Sauer P229.
Before he could draw the weapon, the heavy walnut doors burst open.
A man stumbled backward into the study, clutching his shoulder as dark blood seeped through his fingers. He collapsed against the mahogany bookshelf, sliding down to the Persian rug. Behind him stepped a younger man—tall, broad-shouldered, with raven-black hair, stormy dark eyes, and a jawline carved from the same granite as Vincent’s, but hardened by a bitter, unyielding resentment.
Lucas Moretti.
Vincent’s only son. The prodigal heir who had walked away from the syndicate a decade ago, trading a billion-dollar underworld empire to become a fiercely independent cybersecurity architect and federal consulting contractor—a man whose entire professional career was spent building digital fortresses specifically designed to tear his father’s operations apart.
Vincent froze, his hand hovering over his holster. “Lucas. You’ve lost your damn mind.”
Lucas didn't even look at his father. His stormy eyes were fixed entirely on Emily Carter standing in the middle of the study, wide-eyed and breathing heavily.
“Get away from him, Miss Carter,” Lucas said, his voice hard, urgent, and laced with a desperate warning. “My father doesn't collect people unless he’s planning to bury them.”
“Lucas!” Vincent roared, finally drawing his pistol and leveling it directly at his son’s chest. “You storm into my house, shoot my security detail, and threaten my guests? Have you forgotten whose blood runs through your veins?”
“I haven't forgotten a damn thing, old man!” Lucas shouted back, stepping between Emily and his father without a shred of hesitation, ignoring the barrel of the gun pointed inches from his heart. “That’s why I left! Because everything you touch turns to ash, and everyone who gets close to you ends up paying the price for your god-complex!”
Emily stared at the younger man, her mind racing. This was Lucas Moretti? The legendary estranged son who was supposed to be living in Zurich or Geneva, running tech firms?
“I didn't come here to kill you, Dad,” Lucas said, his voice dropping into a cold, contemptuous hiss as he kept his body positioned protectively in front of Emily. “I came here because my security firm picked up an encrypted alert on Moretti Holdings funneling suspicious capital into St. Jude’s Hospital. I tracked the routing number... and it led straight to a waitress from a rundown diner on the South Side.”
Lucas turned his head slightly, looking back at Emily. “He’s using your mother as leverage against you, isn't he? That’s why you’re here.”
Emily looked from the terrifying, heavily armed father to the furious, defiant son. The family resemblance was staggering, but the war between them was nuclear.
“He paid her medical bills,” Emily said quietly.
“And he’ll make you pay for them with your soul,” Lucas snapped. He grabbed Emily’s wrist, his grip firm but not painful. “We’re leaving. Right now.”
“Nobody is leaving,” Vincent said. His voice wasn't loud. It was terrifyingly quiet. The pistol in his hand didn't waver by a millimeter. “Lower your weapon, Lucas. And take your hand off Miss Carter. Or I swear to God, you won't walk out of this estate.”
Lucas let out a harsh, bitter laugh. He turned to face his father fully, letting go of Emily’s wrist and stepping forward until his chest was nearly touching the barrel of Vincent’s gun.
“Go ahead, Dad,” Lucas challenged, his dark eyes blazing with a decade of accumulated rage. “Pull the trigger. Prove to everyone in Chicago that the great Vincent Moretti is just a butcher who eats his own family when they try to do the right thing.”
For five agonizing seconds, the study held its breath.
The wounded guard groaned on the floor. The grandfather clock ticked away the seconds like a countdown to an explosion.
Then, slowly, Vincent lowered the gun.
A profound, exhausted weariness washed over his face, aging him ten years in a single heartbeat. He looked at his son—the blood of his blood, the only piece of his legacy that had ever mattered to him—standing as an enemy in his own home, defending a stranger because she was the collateral damage of his own ruthless habits.
“Get out,” Vincent whispered, his voice cracking slightly. “Take her and get out of my sight before I change my mind.”
Lucas didn't waste a second. He grabbed Emily’s hand again, pulling her toward the private side exit of the study.

As the door slammed shut behind them, leaving Vincent alone in the dark, wood-paneled room with his bleeding guard and his ghosts, Emily knew one thing with absolute certainty:
The war between the father and the son had just begun, and she was the fuse that was going to blow them both to pieces.
