Chapter 6 - The Reckoning and Rebuilding

The morning after the siege brought a blinding, brilliant blue sky over the snow-covered Berkshire hills.

The police cars, federal transport vans, and forensic units had cleared the grounds by noon. Lorenzo DeLuca’s syndicate was officially finished; its leaders were either dead or facing federal racketeering charges that ensured they would never see daylight again.

The Moretti estate was undergoing rapid repairs. Teams of contractors worked quietly, replacing broken glass, repairing plaster, and restoring the grand mansion to its former glory.

In the master suite, the heavy steel door of the safe room clicked open.

Emma stepped out, holding Lily in her arms. The child was fast asleep, exhausted by the long night, her small face peaceful.

Emma walked out into the bedroom, stopping dead in her tracks.

Alessandro sat in the large velvet armchair near the window. His left arm was bandaged beneath a clean white shirt, a mug of black coffee sitting on the small table beside him. He looked tired, his face showing the strain of forty-eight hours of non-stop warfare, but his gray eyes were clear and completely calm.

“It’s over, Emma,” Alessandro said softly.

Emma set Lily down gently on the king-sized bed, covering her with a soft fleece blanket. She turned around, her hands shaking, and walked slowly toward him.

She looked at the bandage on his arm, then up at his face—at the small cut along his jaw, at the deep lines of exhaustion around his eyes, at the broad shoulders that had carried the weight of an entire empire through the night to keep her safe.

Without a word, Emma dropped to her knees beside his chair.

She reached out, her hands wrapping around his right hand, pressing her cheek against his knuckles. Tears overflowed her eyes, spilling onto his skin.

“You could have been killed,” she wept softly. “You fought an entire army for us...”

Alessandro leaned down, his broad hand cupping her jaw, gently lifting her head until her brown eyes met his.

“I fought for my home, Emma,” Alessandro said, his voice thick with an emotion he had kept buried for seven long years. “And for the first time in my life, my home was inside that room with you.”

Emma gasped, her heart slamming against her ribs with a force that made her lightheaded.

“Alessandro...” she whispered.

“I have spent twenty years building an empire out of fear,” Alessandro confessed, his thumb softly tracing her lower lip. “I thought power was the only thing that could keep a man safe. But when I stood in that hallway last night, listening to the guns outside, I realized I didn't care about the shipping docks. I didn't care about the money. I only cared that when the smoke cleared, I could come back into this room and see your face.”

He slid down from the chair, kneeling on the Persian rug beside her, taking both of her small hands in his.

“I am a man with blood on my hands, Emma,” Alessandro said honestly, his gray eyes vulnerable and exposed. “I cannot offer you a simple, quiet life. But I can offer you a love that will never bend, a protection that will never fail, and a family where you and Lily will never be second to anyone again.”

Emma stared at him, tears streaming down her radiant cheeks. She saw no mob Don in front of her. She saw the man who had listened to her daughter laugh through an open door, the man who had faced an army to protect a maid’s child, the man who had given her back her dignity when the world had thrown her away.

“I don't want a simple life, Alessandro,” Emma sobbed softly, throwing her arms around his broad neck, burying her face into his shoulder. “I just want you. I’ve loved you since the day you let Lily play in that room.”

Alessandro wrapped his powerful arms around her waist, pulling her tight against his chest, holding her as if she were the most precious treasure in the world.

From the bed behind them, a small, quiet voice broke the morning silence.

“Mr. Alessandro?”

Alessandro pulled back slightly, looking over at the bed.

Lily was sitting up, rubbing her big brown eyes, holding a brand-new, plain wooden bear that Marco had carved for her that morning.

“Yes, Lily?” Alessandro asked gently, smiling.

Lily looked at him, then at her mother crying in his arms. “Are you staying with us now?”

May you like

Alessandro stood up, picking Emma up in his arms before walking over to sit on the edge of the mattress, pulling both mother and daughter into his embrace.

“I am never leaving, Lily,” Alessandro promised softly, pressing a kiss against the top of the child’s head. “Never again.”
