Chapter 6 - Waking in the Shadows

Back at Boston General Hospital, the room was bathed in the soft, amber glow of a single bedside lamp.

The digital clock on the wall read 2:14 AM.

Grace stirred slowly against the pillows. Her head throbbed, a dull, heavy ache behind her eyes, and her left arm felt heavy and stiff inside the light cast. But the paralyzing fog of the anesthetics was finally beginning to lift.

She blinked her eyes open.

The first thing she saw was the dark silhouette of a man sitting in the armchair beside her bed, his head bowed, his hands clasped together.

Even in the dim light, she recognized the broad shoulders, the unruly dark hair, and the sharp line of his jaw.

“Ethan?” her voice came out as a dry, ragged whisper.

The man’s head snapped up.

Ethan stood so quickly his chair scraped loudly against the linoleum floor. In two strides, he was beside the bed, his large hands hovering over her uninjured arm as if he were afraid she might vanish if he touched her too hard.

“Grace,” he breathed, his voice breaking. “You’re awake. Thank God.”

Grace stared up at him, tears instantly blurring her vision. Ten years of running, hiding, and building a fortress around her heart crumbled in a single second.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered, a sob catching in her throat. “I didn't mean to ruin your wedding... I didn't want to bring this back to you, but when I saw her... when I saw Celeste...”

Ethan gently pressed two fingers against her lips, silencing her.

“Don’t,” he said softly, his voice thick with emotion. “Don’t ever apologize for coming back to me, Grace.”

He pulled a chair closer, sitting down and wrapping his warm hand carefully around her uninjured fingers.

“I read the letter,” Ethan continued, his eyes shining with unshed tears. “I know what Arthur and Celeste did. I know about the forged documents, the threats, the staged crash. I spent ten years hating a ghost, Grace... while you were living in hell because you were trying to protect our daughter.”

Grace closed her eyes, a tear escaping down her cheek. “Is Lucy... is she okay? Where is she?”

“She’s sleeping right over there,” Ethan said, nodding toward the corner cot where the little girl was curled up peacefully under a heavy blanket. “She’s safe. They’re both safe. Nobody will ever touch you again. I swear it on my life.”

Grace opened her eyes, looking deeply into those familiar pale gray eyes—the exact same eyes she saw every morning when she looked at her daughter.

“You didn't marry her,” Grace noted softly.

A faint, bitter smile touched the corner of Ethan’s mouth. “The wedding ended the moment Lucy walked down that aisle and called me Daddy. The alliance is dead, the Whitmores are facing federal indictment, and my company has severed every tie they ever had.”

Grace squeezed his hand, her fingers trembling. “Ten years, Ethan... how did we lose ten years?”

“We didn't lose them,” Ethan said, leaning forward to press a gentle, lingering kiss against her forehead. “We survived them. And tomorrow, we start taking back every single day they stole from us.”
