Chapter 5 - Shadows at the Door

“Ethan?” Hannah breathed out, her eyes widening in astonishment. “What are you doing here?”
Ethan looked past her into the cramped, modest living room—at the yellow blanket on the couch, the mismatched photo frames, and the tilting kitchen table. Then his gaze returned to Hannah, his expression a mixture of profound apology and fierce determination.
“May I come in?” he asked softly. “Or is my presence going to cause more trouble for you in this neighborhood?”
Hannah hesitated for a fraction of a second, then stepped aside. “It’s fine. Come in before you freeze.”
Ethan stepped into the apartment, ducking slightly beneath the low ceiling frame. He looked entirely out of place in his high-end clothes, yet somehow, as he took off his coat and set the bag of cinnamon rolls on the counter, he seemed to fit into the warmth of the room more naturally than he had ever fit into the cold marble halls of his estate.
Lily peered out from behind Hannah’s leg, recognizing the man from the kitchen.
“Hi, giant teddy bear,” Lily whispered.
Ethan blinked, startled, then a slow, genuine smile spread across his face. He crouched down until he was at eye level with the little girl.
“Hello, little commander,” Ethan said gently. “I brought pastries. Do you like cinnamon rolls?”
“Only if they have extra frosting,” Lily stipulated seriously.
“They are practically 90 percent frosting,” Ethan promised.
He stood back up and turned to Hannah, whose expression remained guarded.
“I know why you’re hesitating, Hannah,” Ethan said, his voice dropping into a serious register. “I read the local rags. I know what people in my social circle are saying about you. And I know Senator Hale is using his remaining influence to pressure local businesses.”
“If you came here to offer charity, Ethan, you can turn right back around,” Hannah said, crossing her arms defensively. “I’ve worked for everything I have. I don't need a billionaire playing knight in shining armor to fix my life.”
“I didn't come here to offer charity,” Ethan said, stepping closer, his dark eyes burning with intensity. “I came here to tell you that the campaign against you is over.”
Hannah frowned. “What do you mean?”
“This afternoon, my legal team filed a federal tort lawsuit against Senator Arthur Hale for defamation, tortious interference, and abuse of municipal authority,” Ethan said calmly. “By 3:00 PM, his lawyers called my office to surrender. The senator has issued a public retraction of every smear published against you, and he has resigned from the board of directors of three major real-estate holding companies.”
Hannah gasped, her hands dropping to her sides. “You went to war with a U.S. senator... for me?”
May you like
“I went to war with a bully who tried to destroy an innocent woman and her child,” Ethan corrected quietly. “And I should have done it a long time ago.”
Before Hannah could process the magnitude of what he had just said, a sudden, loud crash echoed from the hallway outside their apartment door.
