Chapter 5 - Whispers in Santa Fe

The grand ballroom of the Maria Isabel Sheraton Hotel was packed with over fifty journalists, news cameras, and socialite bloggers by four-thirty that afternoon.

Senator Esteban Robles stood behind a podium adorned with his political crest, flanked by his daughter Paulina, who was wearing a white designer dress and holding a handkerchief to her eyes, looking every bit the betrayed socialite.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Senator Robles announced into the wall of microphones, his voice booming with practiced political indignity. "We have called this gathering to address a grave injustice. Today, my daughter Paulina was physically intimidated and illegally evicted from the home she shared with Mr. Diego Villaseñor—a man who has succumbed to extortion by a criminal ring operating within his domestic staff!"

Flashbulbs exploded across the room. Journalists scribbled feverishly on their pads.

"This woman," Robles continued, pointing to a large projected photograph on the screen behind him—a photo Paulina had secretly taken of Marisol in her maid uniform holding Valentina in the kitchen—"entered the Villaseñor residence under false pretenses, utilizing a fake identity to extract millions from one of Mexico’s leading businessmen through fabricated claims of paternity!"

A wave of gasps rippled through the audience.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom burst open.

A team of six muscular men in dark suits stepped inside, clearing a wide path through the standing journalists. The room fell instantly quiet as heavy, confident footsteps echoed across the carpeted floor.

Diego Villaseñor walked into the ballroom.

He was wearing an immaculate charcoal three-piece suit, his silk tie perfectly knotted, his hair styled flawlessly. But it was not his presence that caused the journalists to gasp and scramble for their cameras.

Walking beside him, her hand tucked securely into his arm, was Marisol.

She was dressed in an elegant, knee-length navy blue wool dress that Diego’s personal stylist had delivered to the mansion an hour prior. Her hair was styled in soft, sophisticated waves, and though her hands trembled slightly, she walked with her head held high, her posture graceful and dignified.

And in Diego’s left arm, wrapped in a plush cream-colored coat, sat Valentina.

The little girl was looking around the massive room with those large, curious dark eyes, holding her worn stuffed rabbit against her chest.

"What is the meaning of this crash?" Senator Robles shrieked into the microphone, his face turning red. "Security, remove these trespassers!"

None of the hotel security guards moved. They knew who owned forty percent of the hotel chain's holding company.

Diego walked right up to the stage, stopping just below the podium. He didn't look at the cameras; he looked directly at Senator Robles and Paulina, whose face had gone completely white.

"Senator Robles," Diego’s voice carried effortlessly through the room, clear and commanding without the need for a microphone. "I heard you were discussing my family. I thought it only polite to introduce them to you properly."

A barrage of camera flashes lit up the stage like lightning.

"That woman is a fraud!" Paulina screamed, stepping up to the microphone beside her father. "Show them the proof, Dad! Show them her criminal record!"

Diego calmly reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out an official document embossed with the seal of the Mexican Department of Health and the Civil Registry.

He held it up for the news cameras to see.

"This is the official DNA report, certified less than two hours ago by the Chief of Forensic Medicine at Santa Fe Hospital," Diego announced, his voice steady as rock. "Valentina Villaseñor Gutierrez is my biological daughter. Her probability of paternity is ninety-nine point nine percent."

The ballroom exploded into absolute chaos. Journalists pushed forward, shouting questions at once:

"Mr. Villaseñor! Is it true she was working as your maid?" "Are you filing charges against the Robles family?" "What happens to the Los Cabos development project?"

Diego raised one hand, instantly restoring order to the room.

"Four years ago," Diego said, looking straight into the main television camera, "a series of lies and corporate manipulations separated me from the woman I loved and the child she was carrying. Marisol Gutierrez worked in my house not out of deceit, but out of a mother's desperate, heroic resolve to feed her daughter when everyone else had abandoned her."

He looked at Marisol, his eyes filled with an undeniable, fierce pride.

"She is not a fraud. She is the mother of my daughter, the future matriarch of the Villaseñor estate, and as of five minutes ago, my legal team has filed a thirty-million-dollar lawsuit against Senator Esteban Robles and Paulina Robles for defamation, extortion, and tortious interference."

Paulina let out a choked gasp and collapsed back into a chair on the stage. Senator Robles looked as if he were about to have a heart attack, his mouth opening and closing without sound.

Diego turned his back on the stage, wrapped his arm tightly around Marisol’s waist, and smiled down at Valentina, who was holding her golden button out toward the flashing news cameras.

"Pretty," the child whispered into the roar of the crowd.

"Yes, my love," Diego whispered back, leaning down to kiss her forehead as they walked out of the ballroom together. "Extremely pretty."
