Chapter 5 - The Siege of the Estate

The move to the old, scorched Mendoza estate—the very site where my grandfather had once buried the truth—was a gamble that felt more like a surrender to fate. I relocated my family, Carmen, and the remaining staff to the ruins, which I had spent the last month painstakingly restoring not with gold, but with the specific, ancient materials Carmen had requested. The estate was now a fortress of stone and silence, a place where technology seemed to stutter and die, forced into submission by the raw, crackling energy that Carmen radiated.

The corporate raiders arrived under the shroud of a pre-dawn mist. My former partner, Sterling, led the charge. He was a man who smelled of expensive cologne and bottomless malice, flanked by a tactical team of private security contractors who looked less like guards and more like executioners. They had come to seize the "Mendoza Assets," which they believed were hidden in the foundations of the old house. They didn't understand that the only asset left was the boy, and the debt he carried.

"Rafael!" Sterling’s voice boomed through a megaphone, vibrating against the stone walls. "The board has voted. You are mentally unfit to manage the estate. Step aside, or we will take it by force. We have no interest in your 'charity' schemes."

I stood on the front steps, looking out at the wall of headlights piercing the fog. I wasn't wearing a suit; I was dressed in rough, dark wool, my hands stained with the dust of the work we had done. I wasn't the billionaire anymore. I was a father, and I was a protector.

"You want the legacy?" I shouted back, my voice steady, amplified by the natural acoustics of the valley. "Take it! Take the debt, too! It’s all here, written in the stone!"

As they surged forward, the environment shifted. The earth beneath their boots softened into a sludge that swallowed their high-tech equipment. The drones circling overhead spiraled into the trees as if gravity had changed its mind. Carmen stood in the center of the estate’s ruins, her arms outstretched, her voice rising in that low, haunting incantation. She wasn't just fighting men; she was severing the tethers that connected this city to the greed of my bloodline.

The tactical team hesitated as the shadows in the courtyard began to take on a life of their own, coiling around their weapons. Sterling, blinded by his own ambition, ordered them to fire, but the bullets simply dissolved into ash before they reached the steps. It was a siege of two worlds: the cold, calculating greed of the modern age colliding with an ancient, unstoppable necessity.
