Chapter 5 - Infiltrating the Lion's Den

Midnight in downtown Los Angeles was a symphony of neon reflections on wet asphalt and the low rumble of traffic along the Harbor Freeway.
Standing on the roof of a twenty-story commercial parking structure overlooking the illuminated glass facade of the Blackwood Syndicate’s central headquarters, Carter adjusted the strap of his tactical vest. Beside him, Emma and Lily huddled over a modified tablet, their fingers flying across the screen as they monitored the building’s internal security loops.
"Camera feed on the fourth-floor executive lobby is looped," Emma whispered, her eyes glowing in the tablet's blue light. "Guards are rotating every twelve minutes. You have a four-minute window between the elevator check and the janitorial sweep."
"And the vault?" Carter asked.
"Basement level two," Lily replied without looking up. "Derek is up in the penthouse office right now, meeting with Dominic Crane's lieutenants. He thinks he's untouchable."
Carter looked down at the two girls. It still baffled him that his war for survival—and for vengeance—was being coordinated by children who should have been worrying about spelling tests and playground games. Yet, they had proven more competent than any elite hacker or tactical operative he had ever hired.
"Stay here on comms," Carter told them. "If anything goes sideways, you trigger the emergency extraction route through the storm drains and you don't look back. Understand?"
"We're not going anywhere, Carter," Emma said, meeting his gaze with absolute, unyielding seriousness. "We finish this together."
Carter gave a grim nod, turned, and rappelled down the side of the parking structure toward the darkened alley behind the headquarters.
Moving with the silent precision of a ghost, Carter slipped through a service loading door that had been remotely unlocked by Lily from the roof. The interior of the skyscraper smelled of expensive polish, stale coffee, and the sterile hum of central air conditioning.
He moved up the concrete stairwells, avoiding the elevators where motion sensors and facial recognition cameras were active. Every muscle in his body screamed—the lingering effects of the Calyx poison still made his joints ache with a dull, heavy fatigue—but adrenaline carried him forward.
Derek.
The name was a drumbeat in his skull. Fifteen years of brotherhood, erased by greed.
Carter reached the basement sublevel two. The heavy steel door of the central vault stood before him, secured by a biometric retinal scanner and a twelve-digit numeric keypad.
He didn't need to punch the code.
He pulled a small data cable from his tactical rig and plugged it directly into the maintenance port beneath the keypad.
“Feeding override sequence now,” Lily’s voice crackled softly in his earphone. “Three... two... one... execute.”
The heavy steel door groaned as internal hydraulic locks disengaged. A green LED flashed on the keypad, and the door swung open with a deep, echoing hiss of pressurized air.
Carter stepped inside. Row upon row of safety deposit boxes, bearer bond ledgers, and digital drives containing the syndicate's entire financial lifeblood stretched out before him. But he wasn't here for the money.
In the center of the vault sat a standalone terminal—Derek’s private administrative server.
Carter sat down at the keyboard, pulled Emma's flash drive from his pocket, and slid it into the USB port.
“Downloading master archives,” Emma's voice came through the comms, fast and intense. “Transferring all encrypted communications between Derek and Dominic Crane over the last five years. We’re also pulling the financial records for the offshore accounts in the Caymans.”
Suddenly, the monitor screen flashed red. A sharp alarm tone pinged through the terminal.
“Warning: Unauthorized access detected from terminal 04. Administrative override initiated from Penthouse level.”
Carter cursed under his breath. "They know we're in."

“Disconnect!” Lily yelled through the comms. “Carter, disconnect now! They’re locking down the entire building grid!”
Before Carter could pull the drive, heavy steel security shutters slammed down across the vault door with a deafening crash, sealing him inside the subterranean tomb.
