Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the House of Mercer

Within two hours, St. Catherine’s Medical Center was surrounded, not by police sirens, but by the quiet, absolute control of Dominic Mercer’s organization.
The hospital board was sequestered in the executive conference room. Dr. Malcolm Reddick was zip-tied to a metal chair in the basement maintenance bay, staring up at Mateo while confessing to every forged log, every bribe, and every specific instruction given by Vincent.
Vincent Mercer sat on the floor of the private waiting room, bleeding from a split lip, his expensive suit ruined, looking up at his cousin with a mixture of terror and bitter hatred.
“Are you going to kill me here?” Vincent spat, wiping blood from his chin. “In a hospital? With the cops fifty blocks away?”
Dominic stood over him, holding a heavy gold signet ring that had belonged to their grandfather—the ring that symbolized the head of the Mercer family.
“Kill you?” Dominic asked coldly. “No. Death is too easy for accountants and traitors. You’re going to federal prison, Vincent. I’ve already sent the encrypted hard drives to the U.S. Attorney’s Office with a full confession attached under your name, detailing your tax evasion, your narcotics distribution, and your conspiracy to commit familial murder.”
Vincent’s eyes widened in horror. “You’re handing me to the feds? You’ll implicate yourself!”
“I’m a businessman,” Dominic replied, slipping the signet ring back onto his finger. “I’m pleading guilty to tax restructuring and stepping down from the syndicate entirely. I’m liquidating every illegal asset we own, turning our real estate holdings into legitimate public trusts, and walking away clean. The feds get their trophy in you, and I get my son.”
Vincent opened his mouth to scream, but Dante slapped a heavy strip of duct tape across his mouth, hauling him up by his arms and dragging him toward the service elevator.

Dr. Reddick was bundled out through the loading dock twenty minutes later, handed directly over to federal marshals on an expedited RICO warrant for medical homicide and conspiracy.
By noon, the rain over Chicago finally broke. A pale, golden autumn sunlight cut through the gray clouds, spilling across the skyline of the city where Dominic Mercer had ruled as a king of shadows.
