Chapter 3 - The Cellar of Secrets

"No," Vanessa spat, taking another step back toward the hallway. "This is insane. I am not letting you interrogate me in my own house because your senile mother heard a rumor!"

"I said give me your phone, Vanessa," Daniel repeated, stepping away from his mother’s chair and advancing on his wife.

Vanessa turned to run toward the stairs, but Daniel moved faster than she had ever seen him move. He cut across the kitchen, blocked the hallway entrance, and snatched her designer leather purse off the entryway bench.

"Hey! Give that back! That's my private property!" Vanessa shrieked, lunging for the bag.

Daniel ignored her frantic scratches, unzipping the purse and pulling out her pink-cased smartphone. He brought it up to her face; the facial recognition software unlocked the screen instantly with a soft beep.

"Daniel, stop! You have no right!" Vanessa screamed, trying to grab his wrist.

Daniel held her off with one strong arm, his thumb scrolling rapidly through her recent calls, text messages, and banking applications. His face went from pale anger to absolute, terrifying horror as the numbers flashed across the screen.

Call History: Richard Miller - Apex Luxury Development (14 calls) Text Message to Richard Miller: 'The old lady is resisting, but I'm forcing the signature this week. Secure the $400k deposit.'

Daniel stopped scrolling. His thumb hovered over a banking app that was currently open in the background. He tapped it.

Account Balance: -$84,200 (Overdrawn) Notice: Pending Legal Action - Unpaid Gambling Debt / Credit Line Default.

Daniel’s breath hitched. He raised his eyes slowly from the screen to look at his wife.

For six years, Daniel had believed they were financially secure. He worked sixty hours a week as a senior structural engineer, pulling in nearly two hundred thousand dollars a year. He trusted Vanessa with the household accounts, assuming she was managing their savings, paying the mortgage, and investing wisely.

"Eighty-four thousand dollars in the red?" Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with sheer disbelief. "And a four-hundred-thousand-dollar deposit on my family's land?"

Vanessa stopped clawing at his arm. She stood frozen in the middle of the hallway, her chest heaving, realizing that the thin ice she had been walking on for three years had completely shattered beneath her feet.

"Daniel... listen to me," she whimpered, her tone instantly shifting back into a manipulative, tearful plea. "I... I got into a bad situation online. A year ago. It was just a little card game at first, and then... then I tried to win it back, and the interest got crazy..."

"You tried to sell my mother's home," Daniel said, the realization sinking into his soul like lead. "You tried to steal the land my grandfather built with his bare hands... to cover up your gambling addiction?"

"I was going to pay it back!" Vanessa cried, tears spilling over her mascara, leaving black streaks down her cheeks. "I was going to put the money into our savings! Nobody was going to get hurt! She doesn't even live there, Daniel! The house is sitting empty!"

"It's not empty, you foolish girl," Margaret’s voice drifted from the kitchen doorway.

Margaret was standing now, holding onto the doorframe for support. Her face was still bruised, but her posture was unshakeable.

"My husband's ashes are scattered on that mountain," Margaret said quietly. "Every tree on those twelve acres was planted by Daniel's father when he was a little boy. That land isn't an asset, Vanessa. It's our family's memory."

Vanessa snapped, turning her tear-streaked face toward the old woman with pure, venomous hatred. "Shut up! Just shut your mouth, you miserable old hag! You ruined everything! If you had just signed the papers, we would have been fine! Daniel would have never known!"

Smack.

The sound echoed through the high-ceilinged foyer.

Vanessa’s head jerked to the side. She gasped, pressing her hand against her own cheek, staring at her husband in absolute, stunned shock.

Daniel hadn't hit her hard, but his hand was still extended, trembling with a fury so deep it looked like it was physically burning him from the inside out.

"Don't you ever speak to my mother again," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Get out."

May you like

Vanessa blinked. "What?"

"Get out of my house," Daniel said, pointing toward the front door. "Take your purse, take your car, and get out of my sight before I call the police and have you arrested for elder abuse and grand larceny."
