Chapter 9 - Morning on the Estate

The sun rose over Blackwood Manor the next morning, breaking through the gray winter clouds to flood the snowy landscape with brilliant, golden light.
The war was over.
There were no breaking news reports on television about syndicate shootouts or corporate scandals. In Boston, the underworld operated in the quiet spaces between headlines, and by sunrise, the Moretti family had quietly vanished from every shipping manifest, board room, and union ledger in the city.
I was sitting in the sunroom on the second floor, wrapped in a cashmere shawl, watching the snow melt from the pine branches outside, when the heavy oak door of the room opened.
Damon walked in.
He looked tired—the dark circles beneath his eyes betraying the sleepless night—but his posture was relaxed, his shoulders unburdened by the weight that had carried him through a lifetime of violence.
He walked over, knelt down beside my chair, and gently took my hands in his.
"It's over," he said softly.
I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for three months. "Is Victor gone?"
"Victor and his inner circle are currently halfway across the Atlantic on a private freight vessel bound for South America," Damon smiled faintly. "They won't be back."
"And the documents about my mother?"
"Burned to ash," Damon answered, his slate-gray eyes softening with absolute tenderness. "Your mother’s memory is clean, Sarah. Just like it always was."
I reached out, my fingers tracing the sharp, tired lines of his face. "You didn't sleep at all, did you?"
"I didn't need to," he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to the palm of my hand. "For the first time in my life, I didn't have to look over my shoulder. I didn't have to calculate who was coming for me in the dark. Because I knew you were safe upstairs."
He slid his hand down, resting it gently against my stomach.
"Everything I built... every building, every ship, every dollar, every connection," Damon whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "It was all just a cage I built to protect myself. But I realize now... I was just building a foundation for this moment."
I smiled, tears of pure relief blurring my vision as I leaned forward and rested my forehead against his.
May you like
"We're safe now?" I asked.
"Always," Damon promised, his voice ringing with absolute, unbreakable truth. "Nobody touches what is mine."
