Chapter 9 - The Unscripted Press Conference

Three days after Rose was discharged from the hospital, a catastrophic media storm erupted across the country.

Evelyn Hartwell, desperate to regain leverage after being stripped of her estate trust access, had leaked a slanderous, highly fabricated story to a major national tabloid news outlet.

The headlines flashed across every television screen and news portal: “Billionaire Ethan Hartwell Trapped in Paternity Extortion Scheme by Ex-Nurse.” The article falsely claimed that I had staged a fake pregnancy, produced an unverified child, and was using media blackmail to stall Hartwell Corporate’s multi-billion-dollar European merger.

The company stock plummeted by 8% in pre-market trading, and the board of directors scheduled an emergency vote of no-confidence to remove Ethan as CEO at 2:00 PM.

At 1:30 PM, Ethan didn't attend the private board meeting. Instead, he called an unscheduled, live national press conference in the grand auditorium of Hartwell Tower.

Over two hundred journalists, camera crews, and financial analysts crammed into the room, whispering furiously as the cameras began broadcasting live across international networks.

I sat in the front row of the auditorium, wearing a simple navy blue dress, holding Rose in my arms. Beside me stood Marcus and two armed security personnel.

The side doors opened, and Ethan stepped onto the stage.

He didn't wear a corporate tie. He didn't carry a prepared statement written by PR handlers. He walked directly up to the podium, looking towering, calm, and utterly untamed.

"Good afternoon," Ethan began, his voice echoing clearly through the microphone. "I know most of you are here today expecting me to deliver a corporate damage-control statement regarding our stock valuation and the stories published about my family this morning."

The room went completely quiet as reporters raised their recording devices.

"I am not here to talk about stock," Ethan said flatly.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a certified legal document, setting it down on the podium.

"This is an official, court-admissible DNA report conducted by Northwestern Memorial Hospital," Ethan announced, looking directly into the main television camera lens. "It confirms with 99.99% certainty that Rose Clara Hartwell is my biological daughter."

A sudden wave of camera flashes erupted across the room like lightning.

"The stories leaked to the press this morning were a malicious, fabricated attempt by my mother, Evelyn Hartwell, and former corporate assistant, Victoria Vance, to cover up their own systematic harassment and fraud," Ethan continued ruthlessly. "While I was traveling overseas, my mother and assistant intercepted my private mail, illegally revoked my wife's medical insurance, and left a pregnant woman to endure a high-risk delivery alone in a public ward."

Gasps echoed through the auditorium. The journalists were stunned by the sheer, unvarnished brutal truth spilling from the mouth of Chicago's most guarded billionaire.

"I was a blind, arrogant fool," Ethan confessed openly to millions of viewers. "I allowed my ambition to blind me to the people who truly mattered. But hear me clearly today: my wife, Claire Hartwell, did not extortion me. She walked into my office three days ago to hand me my daughter because she believed I deserved to know the truth."

Ethan stepped out from behind the podium, walking to the edge of the stage and looking directly down at me and Rose.

"To the board of directors who are currently voting on my position as CEO: do not bother," Ethan declared, his voice echoing with absolute finality. "I hereby resign as CEO of Hartwell Corporate, effective immediately."

The room exploded into utter chaos. Reporters jumped out of their seats, screaming questions.

"Mr. Hartwell! Are you walking away from ten billion dollars?!" "Mr. Hartwell! What about the merger?!"

Ethan ignored every single one of them. He stepped off the stage, walked down the aisle toward the front row, and knelt down right in front of me and Rose.

He looked up into my eyes, a calm, radiant peace settling over his face for the very first time in his life.

"My family is not for sale," Ethan said quietly, taking my hand in front of two hundred flashing cameras. "Let's go home, Claire."
