Part 3 – The Secret in the Medical Records

The atmosphere in the examination room changed instantly.
Only minutes earlier, Emma and Daniel had been celebrating the unexpected news that they were expecting identical twin daughters. Now, a laboratory report and an unauthorized login had transformed an ordinary hospital visit into something far more unsettling.
Dr. Sophia Reynolds looked at Daniel and Emma with calm professionalism.
"I don't want either of you to panic."
Daniel managed a strained smile.
"I think we're already past that."
Sophia nodded sympathetically.
"The baby's condition is stable. Right now, my greatest concern isn't the pregnancy."
Emma frowned.
"It's my medical records."
"Exactly."
A Second Blood Test
Within minutes, another nurse arrived carrying fresh collection tubes.
"We're going to repeat the blood test."
Emma extended her arm without hesitation.
"If this clears everything up, let's do it."
As the nurse prepared the needle, Daniel noticed something unusual.
The woman seemed unfamiliar.
"I don't think we've met."
The nurse smiled politely.
"I usually work on the surgical floor."
"My colleague became ill this morning."
Daniel nodded, though something about her made him uneasy.
Her name badge simply read:
L. Carter
No first name.
Only an initial.
She drew the blood quickly.
"Results should be ready in about twenty minutes."
Then she left.
Daniel watched her disappear into the hallway.
Something didn't feel right.
The Security Review
Meanwhile, Hospital Security Director Robert Hayes sat in front of six surveillance monitors.
The IT department had just informed him that someone had accessed Emma Lawson's medical file using the credentials of a former employee.
Robert immediately requested camera footage.
6:05 a.m.
A woman wearing hospital scrubs entered the records office.
Her face was hidden behind a surgical mask and cap.
6:08 a.m.
She logged into a workstation.
6:12 a.m.
Emma Lawson's electronic file opened.
6:14 a.m.
The woman inserted a small USB drive.
6:16 a.m.
She logged out.
6:17 a.m.
She walked away.
Robert enlarged the video.
Just before she left, the woman adjusted her mask.
Only for a second.
It was enough.
Robert froze the frame.
"I know her."
He picked up the phone.
"Find Nurse Laura Carter."
Twenty Minutes Later
Back upstairs, Dr. Bennett returned with the repeat laboratory results.
He smiled.
"The second sample matches your medical history."
Emma sighed with relief.
"So the first one wasn't mine?"
"It appears someone deliberately switched the sample."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Someone?"
Dr. Bennett nodded.
"This wasn't a laboratory mistake."
"The barcode attached to the first tube belonged to Emma."
"But the blood inside belonged to someone else."
Emma stared at him.
"Why would anyone do that?"
Nobody had an answer.
The Missing Nurse
Security officers searched every department.
Laura Carter wasn't in the surgical ward.
She wasn't in the emergency department.
She wasn't anywhere in the hospital.
Robert checked employee records.
Laura Carter had never worked there.
The identification badge was fake.
Even worse...
No one named Laura Carter existed in the hospital's employment database.
The woman who had just drawn Emma's blood had entered the hospital using a stolen identity.
An Unexpected Discovery
Daniel's phone vibrated.
It was his assistant.
"Mr. Lawson..."
"You asked me to investigate everyone who recently contacted your company."
"Yes."
"We found something."
Daniel stepped into the hallway.
"What is it?"
"Three weeks ago..."
"...someone requested confidential information about your family's medical insurance."
Daniel stopped walking.
"Who?"
"The request came from a private investigative firm."
"I never authorized that."
"We know."
"The strange part is..."
"The investigation wasn't focused on you."
Daniel frowned.
"Then who?"
"Emma."
His heartbeat quickened.
"What exactly were they looking for?"
"They wanted every medical record she had since childhood."
Daniel looked through the glass window into the examination room.
Emma was smiling weakly as Chloe tried to distract her with baby name suggestions.
Someone had been investigating her for weeks.
Maybe months.
But why?
The Envelope
As the family prepared to leave the hospital, a receptionist hurried toward them.
"Mrs. Lawson?"
Emma turned.
"Yes?"
"This was left for you."
She accepted a plain white envelope.
"No sender?"
The receptionist shook her head.
"A woman asked me to give it to you personally."
Emma opened it.
Inside was a single ultrasound photograph.
Not today's scan.
An older one.
Dated nearly eight years earlier.
There was also a handwritten note.
You were never supposed to see this.
Emma's hands began to shake.
"This..."
She whispered.
"I've never been pregnant before."
Daniel looked at the image.
The patient name had been partially torn away.
Only the surname remained visible.
LAWSON
Chloe frowned.
"But you and Daniel weren't even married eight years ago."
Emma nodded.
"I didn't even know him."
Dr. Bennett carefully examined the photograph.
"The image is authentic."
"It isn't generated or altered."
Daniel looked at Emma.
"Do you recognize it?"
She slowly shook her head.
"No."
Then her eyes fell on the date again.
Eight years earlier.
That date stirred a distant memory.
She suddenly remembered spending several weeks volunteering at a women's shelter while recovering from a car accident.
She had no memory of ever entering a hospital for an ultrasound.
Yet the photograph suggested otherwise.
The Phone Call
Before anyone could make sense of the mystery, Daniel's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered cautiously.
"This is Daniel."
A calm male voice replied.
"If you want to know why someone changed Emma's medical records..."
"...stop looking at the hospital."
Daniel's expression darkened.
"What do you mean?"
"You're searching in the wrong place."
"Who is this?"
The caller ignored the question.
"The answer has been hidden inside your own family for nearly thirty years."
Click.
The call ended.
Daniel lowered the phone slowly.
Emma searched his face.
"What did he say?"
He looked at her, unable to hide the fear in his eyes.
"He said..."
"...whatever is happening didn't start at this hospital."
"It started with my family."
Outside the hospital windows, storm clouds gathered over the city.

Neither Daniel nor Emma realized that the mystery surrounding their unborn daughters was no longer just about medicine.
It was about a decades-old family secret—one that someone had been willing to manipulate medical records, steal identities, and risk innocent lives to keep buried.
