Chapter 3 - The Anatomy of Fear

The drunk let out a high-pitched whimper that sounded entirely out of place in the grim setting of the diner. Thorne hadn't broken the man's wrist yet, but the pressure he was applying suggested he could do so with the casual indifference of snapping a toothpick.

"Do you know where you are?" Thorne asked, his voice conversational, as if they were discussing the weather.

The drunk gasped, struggling to pull his arm away, but Thorne was immovable. "Look... man, I'm sorry. I'm just drunk, okay? Let me go."

"'Sorry' is a word for people who made a mistake," Thorne said. "You didn't make a mistake. You made a choice. You chose to target someone who cannot defend herself. That is a failure of character that I find... irredeemable."

Thorne released him, and the drunk tumbled backward, tripping over his own feet and landing hard on the checkered floor. He scrambled to get up, but Thorne stepped over him, his presence blocking the way to the kitchen or the exits.

Mara felt a strange, chilling sensation crawling up her spine. She had always thought of herself as a ghost in this town, someone invisible to the people who frequented the diner. She was just the waitress. The girl with the tired eyes and the shaky hands. But as she watched Thorne systematically dismantle the drunk’s reality, she realized she had been watched for six weeks. Every night, he had been studying her.

"What do you want from me?" Mara asked, her voice stronger now, though still coated in shock.

Thorne turned to her. The cold, lethal mask he wore for the drunk softened, just a fraction. It was a terrifying transformation, because it suggested he was capable of a different kind of intensity—something more personal. "I want you to be safe, Mara. And I want to ensure that those who threaten your safety are removed from the equation permanently."

He pulled a gold-plated fountain pen from his pocket and tapped it against the counter. "You have a choice. You can let me handle this in the way I see fit, or you can go into the walk-in freezer and cover your ears. I would suggest the latter."
