Chapter 5 - The Gift of Sound

Two weeks into the strange arrangement, Damian’s health had shown an inexplicable, miraculous stabilization.

His doctors—the few independent ones he still trusted—were baffled. His blood pressure had leveled out. The violent tremors in his hands had subsided enough for him to hold a pen for short periods. The poison was still present in trace amounts, but his body was fighting back, energized by a mysterious psychological catalyst that science couldn't quantify on a chart.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, Lila sat cross-legged on the massive mattress, wearing a pair of oversized woolen socks that Mara had knitted for her.

Damian sat propped up, watching her with an expression that bordered on human. It was a look no living soul in Baltimore had ever witnessed—softened, stripped of its predatory edge.

“Look,” Lila whispered softly, her voice carrying that peculiar, unmodulated tone common to children who cannot hear themselves speak. She reached out and touched Damian’s left ear, right where his silver-threaded hair met his jaw.

Damian blinked, surprised. “What is it, little one?”

Lila pulled a small, metallic object from her pocket—a spare audio cable connector she had found in the service room. She carefully brought it toward his ear, pressing it against the skin just behind his lobe, then pointed to her own pink hearing device.

Damian stared at her, a slow, dark realization dawning on him. She wasn't just feeling his heartbeat. She was trying to share her world with him. She wanted him to understand what it felt like to receive sound through a different channel.

A rare, faint smile touched the corners of Damian’s mouth—a ghost of a smile that made him look twenty years younger.

“You think I’m too loud, don't you?” he rasped softly.

Lila grinned, her dark eyes crinkling at the corners, and patted his cheek with her small, warm hand.

At that exact moment, the heavy oak door of the master bedroom clicked open.

Mr. Vance stepped inside, his face whiter than bleached bone. Behind him stood Mara, her eyes wide with terror, her hands trembling as she held a silver tea tray.

“Mr. Volkov,” Vance said, his voice shaking. “We have an uninvited guest in the foyer. Viktor Rossi has arrived with three armed enforcers. He says he’s here to take over the ledger review... and he’s demanding immediate access to the east wing.”
