Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Truth

The storm outside raged into the late hours of the night.

After the guards dragged Marco away and cleaned the blood from the floor, the mansion settled back into an uneasy silence.

I sat on the velvet sofa in Lorenzo's study, a hot mug of chamomile tea resting in my lap, my hands still shivering slightly from the chaos of the night.

The heavy door opened, and Lorenzo stepped back in. He had removed his blood-stained jacket and rolled his white sleeves up to his elbows, exposing the thick, dark ink of tribal tattoos covering his forearms. He poured himself two fingers of scotch and sat down on the sofa beside me.

For a long time, neither of us said a word.

"You saved her again tonight," Lorenzo said softly, breaking the silence. "If you hadn't checked that vial..."

"I'm a nurse, Lorenzo. It's my job," I replied, looking down into my tea.

"No," Lorenzo corrected, reaching out and gently taking the mug from my hands, setting it on the coffee table. He reached over and took my trembling hands into his warm, firm palms. "It's not just your job. A woman doing a job doesn't look at my daughter the way you do. A woman doing a job doesn't put herself in the crosshairs of a mafia war."

He looked into my eyes, his intense gaze melting away the final layers of my defenses.

"Why are you really here, Emma?" he asked, his voice low and raspy. "Is it just because of Juliana's promise?"

I swallowed hard, feeling the rapid beat of my heart against my ribs.

"At first... yes," I admitted honestly. "I came here because I felt I owed Juliana my life. I wanted to pay off my debt by saving her daughter."

"And now?" Lorenzo pushed, leaning a fraction of an inch closer, his thumb gently stroking the back of my hand.

"Now..." My voice trailed off as I looked at his strong, battle-worn face, seeing the deeply devoted father beneath the terrifying mafia Don. "Now I can't imagine leaving this house. I can't imagine leaving Sophia. Or... or you."

Lorenzo’s breath hitched.

He didn't say another word. He reached out, his long fingers cupping the back of my neck, and pulled me toward him. When his lips met mine, it felt like an explosion of heat and lightning that burned away two years of grief, fear, and loneliness in a single second.

The kiss was fierce, possessive, yet surprisingly gentle. I wrapped my arms around his broad shoulders, burying my fingers in his dark hair as he pulled me flush against his chest.

When he finally pulled back, his dark eyes were burning with a fierce, absolute light.

"I spent two years in the dark, Emma," he whispered against my lips. "You brought the sun back into this house. I am never letting you go."

Before I could answer, a sudden, sharp alarm began to blare throughout the entire estate. Red emergency lights flashed against the study windows, and the deafening sound of automatic rifle fire erupted from the front gates.

The Morettis had arrived.
