Chapter 5 - The Mask Slips

The threat hung in the air like poison gas.

Matthew stood up slowly from the table, towering over Cassandra. The man she had known as a quiet, accommodating, corporate mediator was entirely gone; in his place stood an adversary who had spent a decade dismantling corporate fraud syndicates and uncovering hidden webs of deceit.

“You think you hold all the cards, don't you?” Matthew said softly, stepping around the table toward her.

Cassandra backed up a step, her eyes darting toward the hallway exit. “Don’t come near me, Matthew. I mean it. I have powerful friends, and my lawyer has copies of everything stored off-site. If anything happens to me, you go down for domestic abuse.”

“Your lawyer?” Matthew let out a short, humorless bark of laughter. “You mean Arthur Sterling? The ambulance-chaser who’s currently under federal investigation for securities fraud? I checked his name on the flight manifest I reviewed this morning. He was indicted three days ago.”

Cassandra’s face went completely bloodless. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

“You didn't know?” Matthew mocked gently, closing the distance between them until she was pressed against the sideboard. “You thought you were the smartest person in the room, Cassandra. You thought my absences meant ignorance. But every transaction you made, every signature you forged, every threat you made to Sofia—it’s all been digitally logged, recorded, and backed up.”

“You... you recorded me?” she whispered, terror finally breaking through her defiance.

“Sofia has a digital dashcam app on her phone that automatically syncs to the cloud whenever she enters the house,” Matthew lied smoothly—a bluff, but one he knew would shatter her remaining composure. “Every shove, every insult, every time you raised your hand against my mother—it’s all timestamped and verified.”

Cassandra let out a feral hiss of frustration. She lunged forward, her nails clawing at his face, but Matthew caught her wrists mid-air with iron strength, pinning her hands to her sides.

“It’s over, Cassandra,” he said, his voice dropping into a terrifying whisper. “You are going to pack your bags tonight. You are going to sign a full relinquishment of any claims to this property and my family’s estate. And if you ever attempt to contact my mother, my house, or my staff again, I won't just ruin you civilly—I will ensure every federal prosecutor in this state buries you under a jail cell.”

He released her wrists so violently that she stumbled back against the sideboard, knocking over a crystal decanter that shattered on the floor.

Before she could recover her voice, the kitchen door swung open.

Sofia stood in the doorway, holding a digital tablet. Her expression was calm, composed, and utterly resolute.

“Mr. Vance,” Sofia said clearly. “The local police precinct is on the line. They have the preliminary fraud report you requested regarding the forged power of attorney. They’re asking if you want to press charges now or wait until Mrs. Vance’s legal counsel arrives in the morning.”

Cassandra stared at Sofia, then back at Matthew, realizing with absolute horror that she had lost completely.
